Solomon Ortiz Concedes to GOP Challenger (TX-27)
Roll Call ^ | 11/22/10 | Tricia Miller

Rep. Solomon Ortiz conceded to his Republican challenger Monday night, according to a regional representative of the National Republican Congressional Committee who is in Texas’ 27th district.

The Texas Democrat called challenger Blake Farenthold, a former radio talk-show host, as the last county in his district worked toward wrapping up its recount.

The Farenthold victory brings the net Republican House pickups this cycle to 62 seats, with four House races still outstanding from the midterm elections. The Republican was on Capitol Hill last week for freshman orientation.

Ortiz asked for the recount, which cost him $23,500, after the original unofficial count showed him down by 799 votes. Five of the district's six counties had finished by Friday, but Cameron County — which was also dealing with a recount in a county judge’s race — was still finishing recounting absentee and early ballots Monday evening. Officials there expected to certify the vote count Monday night.

A former chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and the current chairman of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Readiness, the 14-term Congressman had never gotten less than 55 percent in a re-election campaign. His races in 2006 and 2008 were among his closest: he won re-election with 57 percent in 2006 and with 58 percent in 2008.

Ortiz’s son, Democratic state Rep. Solomon Ortiz Jr., also lost Nov. 2. He represents Corpus Christi.

Maffei still has not conceded to Buerkle in NY. I’m afraid he is gonna call for a handcount and votes “will be found.”

“A former chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and the current chairman of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Readiness, the 14-term Congressman had never gotten less than 55 percent in a re-election campaign”

This is a very big win. You didn’t even have to follow that race to realize that

The gross pick-up is 66 seats because there were 3 GOP seats lost in DE, LA and HI.

Democratic Texas Rep. Solomon Ortiz Concedes Defeat to Republican
Nov 22, 2010 9:43 PM EST

SAN ANTONIO — U.S. Rep. Solomon Ortiz has conceded defeat to Republican challenger Blake Farenthold after a manual recount failed to make up the about 800 votes he trailed by.

Ortiz said late Monday that he called to congratulate Farenthold, a political newcomer, and that the two would meet next week in Washington.

Farenthold said the 73-year-old lawmaker was “very gracious.”

Updated: 8:50 p.m. Monday, Nov. 22, 2010

Ortiz paid a $23,500 deposit for a manual recount after unofficial results showed he trailed Farenthold by 799 votes of the about 106,500 cast across the Texas 27th Congressional district.

But he conceded after the final 15,000 votes were recounted Monday in Brownsville and didn’t change the final election result

I never thought I would live long enough to see the day when a Republican was elected to Congress from Corpus Christi.

Blake Farenthold has done us a huge service. Thank You Mr. Farenthold.

No resting on our laurels - that’s what the RATS expect us to do, and they will try to paint the Tea Party as a one-hit wonder.

People like Corpus Christi talk show host (KCTA) Bob Jones played a big role in getting Ortiz out of there. I know Bob Jones personally, a good conservative.

Blake Farenthold won only because Willie Vaden ran against Ortiz in the last two elections. Vaden would have been the Repub candidate except that ortiz had his supporter vote in the repub primary with orders” anybody but Vaden”

Vaden got more and more of the vote against ortiz each time he ran
