On At-Large this weekend, Al Sharpton, (a chronically under-rated civil rights leader and old friend), and I pondered an interesting question: should people who consider themselves progressive applaud the election of minorities who are conservatives? It came up when Reverend Al and I were talking about the sweeping victories in the mid-term elections of Hispanic Republicans, most prominently Floridas Senator-elect Marco Rubio.
Right now, the 39-year old Cuban-American is the Latino golden boy; hes standing astride the big stage after first driving Floridas popular governor Charlie Crist from the GOP before the Senate primary,

Aside from his early and powerful Tea Party support, Marco Rubios victory is not unprecedented in the Sunshine State. He is replacing another Cuban American, Senator Mel Martínez who was also reliably conservative, consistently anti-Castro, and who retired a year ago.

Led by the Cubans (whom I have argued to some controversy became Republicans early, largely because of their sweetheart immigration deal), more will move to the right politically. To generalize, Hispanic culture is reflexively conservative; with heavy emphasis on family, care of the elderly, church (right to life), country, hard work and just rewards. In the words of Ronald Reagan, they are Republicans; they just dont know it yet.
If the GOP would just abandon, or more realistically moderate its currently noxious immigration politics, and policies like the English-only nonsense and efforts to repeal the Fourteenth Amendment, many Latinos would be up for grabs in terms of party affiliation.
In other words, if Senator Marco Rubio opts for the big tent politics of Karl Rove, George W. Bush (circa 2004), John McCain (circa 2006) and the late Jack Kemp, he could accelerate the process, expanding his party's majority on his way to the vice-presidency. Now that would be historic.

What a waste of humanity is Jerry Rivers.
WHOREaldo = POS
Psssst! Marco
Nobody every gained any credibility or respect by associating with Geraldo Rivera.
Jerkwater Rivers is now on his 5th (that’s right!) his 5th wife! Where else but the American left could you find 5 women so incredibly stupid! Unbelievable.
If one is known by the compny he keeps...Al Sharpton??
Jerry could be in the camp of a fellow Hispanic just for the sake of him being Hispanic were it not for Rubio’s conservative principles getting in the way...oh now nice it would be if only Rubio was a worthless, cowardly checked-pants country club rino in the mold of W. Bush or McPain. Then Jerry and his “underrated” buddy rev.(with a little “r”) Al would be so happy.
If only we would just surrender
If only we would just give in
If only you would let us rule you
If only you would give us your land
If only you would give us your money
The Caudillo never quits, never gives up in his relentless quest to Take from the Weak for he is Strong
Welcome to the disease that is "hispanic" culture
Will we be weak? Will we give in?
Geraldo, isn’t there an empty vault for you to open somewhere?
Jerry River describes himself as a liberal Republican. Whenever I hear that term I think of Democrat lite or in disguise.albeit RINO’s won’t use the L word but are on par with Whorealdo.
NOBODY EXPECTS THE SPANISH REPUBLICANS!
Jerry Jerry—Rubio’s stance has nothing to do with Latinos- it's about illegal immigration—you know breaking the laws-—and really about immigration period.
We do not need any more immigrants except Christians who are being crucified in their Muslim dominated and occupied countries.
In other words; If we don’t cave into amnesty and open borders, we will never get the majority of the Hispanic vote.
If the GOP would just abandon . . . policies like the English-only nonsense . . .
Sounds like Geraldo needs to move to a Spanish-speaking country. How about Cuba or Mexico?
Rubio is smarter than the average media whore like Jerry. He knows that the restoration of America is going to require an honest approach to the problem of illegal immigration, and PC ain’t it.
Uhh, you think Marko got where he is by taking advise from a Heraldo... doi!
So, how does Whorealdo explain people like Susana Martinez being elected in New Mexico? She is very much opposed to illegal immigration ans she was elected to the governor’s office in a strongly hispanic state.
Shame on Her-al-do for making this a race issue. I noticed that comments are “closed” on the FoxLatino article site.
Yeah, after Franco walloped 'em in 1938, nobody thought they'd ever show their faces again. But like the Phoenix, they appear -- in the guise of Marco Rubio -- to have arisen from the ashes.
Sí, se puede!
I would think the people most opposed to illegal immigration would be legal hispanic citizens who went through the process, why should they have worked so hard only to see the others get citizenship for nothing.
