Latinos now majority in state schools

Latinos now make up the majority of students in California public schools, according to new figures released by the state Department of Education.

More than 50 percent of all 6.2 million students enrolled in the state's k-12 schools in 2009-10 were Latinos. It's the first time ever the group made up the majority of state public school enrollment

In Orange County, about 47 percent of 502,275 students were Latino, while 32 percent were white, 14 percent were Asian and 2 percent were black.

Statewide, 27 percent of students were identified as white, 9 percent were black and 6.9 percent were Asian.

In 2008-09, 49 percent of students statewide were Latino, 28 percent of students were white, 7 percent were black and 8 percent were Asian. Locally last year, 45 percent of students were Latino, 28 percent were white, 8 percent were Asian and 2 percent were black.

The data also show that overall enrollment in the state and Orange County continues to steadily decline. About 2,000 fewer students attended public schools locally, while the state had about 16,000 students less.

State officials, educators and researchers have attributed several factors to a decline in enrollment. They include the lower birth rate of school-aged children in general, and the high rate of younger families leaving the state because of the sagging economy.

Um ... also because perhaps white Americans are homeschooling and sending their children to private school, so they won't be learning math in Spanish?

Never continues to amaze me how stupid members of the media are.

A key trend overlooked here is the exodus of students from the government schools.

Bankruptcy and “failing schools” here we come. Oh wait ... California already has the latter.

I walk close by to Hollywood High School where Mary Hart of ET graduated. There are NO WHITE KIDS...ever.

My dad graduated from there, in the mid-50s. His yearbook looks as if it could have been in Maine or Vermont. Alas.

The people who are feeling hope and optimism about America’s future, do not see what you describe. They are, indeed, part of the problem, with their foolish pollyanna complacency.

These are truly shocking numbers. Does it mean that several million CA Anglo children are in private schools or being home-schooled? The 27 percent statewide Anglo number seems too small, but I am not quarreling with the statistics.

I guess Americans are supposed to be happy or what?

I know one guy's dream of a "new America" is coming true...

We are now one of the largest Spanish-speaking nations in the world. We're a major source of Latin music, journalism and culture.

Just go to Miami, or San Antonio, Los Angeles, Chicago or West New York, New Jersey ... and close your eyes and listen. You could just as easily be in Santo Domingo or Santiago, or San Miguel de Allende.

For years our nation has debated this change -- some have praised it and others have resented it. By nominating me, my party has made a choice to welcome the new America.

Our future cannot be separated from the future of Latin America.

As I speak, we are celebrating the success of democracy in Mexico.

Can you guess who it is?

I can tell you from daily experience that the overwhelming majority of immigrants I see have no interest whatsoever in assimilating. In CA, we have people who were born here who do not know how to speak English... and see no reason to learn it.

They and their children have no interest in anything American and don’t really care too much about what happens here. They have not bought in to our country in any way. Our laws and system mean little to them. America is a source of income; that’ it.
