Kalliope is the Muse of “heroic poetry.” She is now best known as Homer’s muse, the inspiration for the Odyssey and the Illiad.

I did not know that, re Kalliope being the Muse of heroic poetry. I read the Odyssey with my Middle Schoolers, but not the original. Very cool bit of info, thanks.
I recall putting my fingers in my ears when the steam calliope on Barnum & Bailey's parade wagon came by on its circuit inside the "Big Top" -- playing Julius Fucik's iconic circus march, "Entrance (or 'Entry') of the Gladiators". (To circus folk, AKA "Thunder and Blazes"...)
