Kate Smith and Assimilation
Political Mavens ^ | Oct. 4, 2010

A recent AP-Univision poll of Hispanics includes a troubling, even stunning, fact: Forty-six percent - a near majority - do NOT wish to change to assimilate into America, roughly defined as learning English, prizing American history and tradition, and respecting U.S. law. This finding should alarm, on every level. First, as Lincoln said, "A house divided against itself cannot stand." Second, the polling percentage routs any other U.S. group. Third, it contradicts all American historical experience: every large immigrant group has YEARNED to assimilate - until now. Theodore Roosevelt said, "Anyone who calls himself a hyphenated American is not a real American." Franklin Roosevelt introduced Kate Smith to Britain's George VI by saying, "This is America!" By then, the megapopular star had become the peerless Voice of America's timeless tune. Irving Berlin, a Russian Jewish emigrant, wrote "God Bless America," tying loyalty ("Land that I love"), faith ("With a light from above"), and unity ("from the mountains, to the prairies"). In 1938, he revised it for Smith, who made it hers. Should any group be IN, but not OF, America? Should any demand taxpayer-funded bilingualism, forge an invasion of millions of illegal aliens, and request citizenship as ENTITLEMENT: break the law, win a prize?

History proves that "balkanization" can bring ruin to the greatest nation-states. As the term suggests, it came from the events of the Balkan States region of Eastern Europe which eventually even helped precipitate the First World War and contributed to the rise of Communism. Now, in America, it appears we may have created our own "Fifth Column."

Lincoln? ... LOL ...

That would be Jesus Christ ... Mark 3:25, among the other gospels.

The Civil Rights movement has been twisted by Gov’t and the Left into a pro-victimhood, America-hating, ethnic-enclave-promoting policy for all immigrants and minorities in the United States.

Balkanization is the wrong term here. What we have is something more like the situation where the Turks and Kurds live in the same broad geographic region BUT at different elevations. (Turks farm wheat in the valleys and Kurds tend flocks in the highlands).

With 90% of the illegal aliens coming from one country, Mexico, it's pretty clear their "problems" keep them in either a valley or a peak of some kind. Let's say it's education ~ they haven't got it; Americans have education squeezing out their ears, plus high technology.

The Mexican illegals face an almost insurmountable education and technology difference, and it's dooming them to live like their ancestors from the 15th century.

As in Turkey this difference is going to lead to a period of violent conflict ~ which may well be underway in Mexico itself. Those who aspire to an American way of life are being attacked by the savage narcotrafficantes who are very typical of the Mexicans who have slipped into this country. Just a matter of time and that violence will spread into the rest of El Norte.

Like the Turks in modern times, or the Kurds way back under Sal al Din, we must be prepared to be quite brutal with the insurgents or it's all over.

“Multiculturalism”

The lefty brain-deads (oxymoron) embrace multicultural separatism.

Lefty brain-deand hate American and celebrate its destruction through separatism.

When my g-grandfather came to this country it was a necessity of life to learn English and assimilate into American culture. Now Hispanic immigrants have no incentive to learn English as Spanish language services are available everywhere and it would be considered “racist” to expect them to assimilate.

Lincoln was fond of quoting scriptural passasges that were apt for particular contemporary issues. That was one example.

That’s right - unless certain minorities like the New Black Panthers intimidate voters at the polls with clubs and racial epithets. Then the Obama-Holder DOJ will look the other way.

Exactly right - and this is why I contend we’ve created our own “fifth column,” fed by the forces of PC multiculturalism and moral equivalence, from public school indoctrination to every other aspect of our culture.

Multiculturalism is just one aspect of the PC moral relativism that’s destroying our Judeo-Christian Western civilization from within. “Civilizations die from suicide, not by murder.” — Arnold Toynbee

Choose whatever term you prefer to describe it but we’re participating in our own cultural destruction. With ever-increasing taxes and social tensions from bankrupt public school districts, insolvent hospitals, prison incarcerations, the human and fiscal ravages of the drug cartel, bilingualization and multiculturalism, etc. Above all, we’re NOT enforcing our own constitutional law:

Article. IV., Section. 4: “The united States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion.”

Bi-lingualism is not, per se, a major source of social ills. It may be a symptom, but it's rarely a cause. What is a problem is extreme cultural dissimilarity where the two sides simply do not share common values.

I think, in the end, we will have found it a wise course of action to have tossed Liberals and other sorts of Leftwingtards into the sea rather than continue to let them play a part in the national psychodrama with their PC nonsense.

I agree that bilingualism is not per se a major problem if it applies to individuals who are fluent in two languages. I probably chose the wrong word to make my point. I was referring to the deliberate efforts of many to make America, as a nation, bilingual. This is clearly divisive and contrary to the ideals of American assimilation of immigrants that they learn and adopt English as their primary language. This is not being encouraged and we now see Spanish available as an alternative language in everything from making a phone call to its wholesale use in commerce and industry as a linguistic option. Further, the immigrants unwilling (with encouragement) to learn English only retard their own social integration and social-economic advancement and mobility. We need only look at Quebec to see how this battle has ravaged their social order. Language can be a force for unity or disunity. Teddy Roosevelt, in his famous speech, also said that in America there is room for only one common language - English.

That was Roosevelt. Although I only speak one language I can read more than a dozen fairly well, and can deduce the pictorial content of many Chinese characters.

If you want to study history you really have to be able to do that. One of my cousin's kids speaks several languages ~ she absorbs them like a sponge picking up water.

Now, about Spanish as a second choice, when I get a call or make a call and it tells me to press 2 for Spanish, I stop the call in its track. The correct way to do that is to pay the money for the computer that responds to what you say, and if it's in Spanish, it flips to the Spanish track, or if German, it flips to German, or French, or whatever.

That's the modern way.

People who try to operate with a PBX without using the latest and greatest stuff aren't worth my doing business with them.

Oh, yeah, second language ~ Eastern Kentucky hillbilly! Got that one down real good back in grade school.
