Jerry Brown Reacts to Meg Whitman ‘Whore’ Slur at Debate (Video & Transcript)
Tuesday, October 12, 2010 | Kristinn

Posted on 10/12/2010 9:42:26 PM PDT by kristinn

California gubernatorial candidates Meg Whitman and Jerry Brown debated tonight at Dominican University in San Rafael. The moderator was Tom Brokaw who raised the 'whore' comment with Brown.

Video of the exchange at Bay Area NBC

Transription by Kristinn.

BROKAW: Mr. Brown you did attempt to reach out to the police union. The telephone message was left on. It's now a notorious part of this campaign. In which somebody in your campaign referred to Ms. Whitman as a "whore." A campaign spokesman then described that as "salty language" and apologized after a fashion. We've heard no outrage from you about the use of that kind of language which to many women is the same as calling an African-American the n-word. Have you been in charge of the investigation in your campaign to find out who is responsible for using that phrase?

BROWN: I don't agree with that comparison, number one. Number two, this is a five week old private conversation...

WHITMAN: Oooohh.

BROWN: ...picked up on a cellphone, uh, with a garbled transmission. Very hard to detect who it is. This is not, I don't want to get into the term and how it's used. But I will say the campaign apologized promptly and I affirm that apology tonight.

BROKAW: You're repeating it to Ms. Whitman?

BROWN: Yes I am. I do. I, it's unfortunate. I'm sorry it happened. I apologize.

WHITMAN: So Jerry, it's not just me, it's the people of California who deserve better than slurs and personal attacks. That's not what California is about. It is not our better selves. And I, um, think people know exact...I think every Californian, and especially women, know exactly what's going on here. And that is a deeply offensive term to women.

BROWN: Well, can I just interject? Have you chastised your chairman, Pete Wilson, who called Congress "whores" to the public sector unions?

WHITMAN: You know better than that Jerry. That's a completely different thing. The fact you are defending your campaign...

AUDIENCE: Heckles Whitman.

WHITMAN: The fact you are defending your campaign for a slur and, um, you know, a personal attack on me I think it's not befitting of California. It's not befitting of the office that you're running for.

BROWN: It's unfortunate. Private conversation. I'm not even sure it's legal because you have to get the consent of all the parties and there's lots of people talking so, I again, Ms. Whitman I'm sorry it happened. That does not represent anything other than things that happen in a campaign. But the issue there of course is pension reform and the fact that you got the endorsement of that union. I didn't because they said I'd be too tough on unions and public employee pensions and I'll take that.

WHITMAN: So that's actually...

AUDIENCE: Cheers Brown.

BROKAW: Admonishes audience to keep quiet.

Tape ends.

Kind of like Fiorina who was fired after building up HP with less employees.

The Dill’s Act did not create the SEIU.

You have some principled friend there if he’s so sure he’d turn down $120M. Why am I skeptical? Maybe because talk is cheap? Not to mention it’s been noted that she was gone from eBay before the layoffs.

But by all means, stand by your principles and deal with Gov. Brown for the next four years. Just let’s not hear any complaining. He was CA gov when I lived there 30+ years ago. Wouldn’t even consider going thru it again.

Any suggestions on what to tell him?

No. If he doesn't understand that the layoffs probably saved a lot more jobs, he would never get it.

He doesn't sound very smart.

You might tell him that he should vote for her and give her a BIG pay cut. LOL!

I don't have to ask him that question. I already know the answer. If my bonus was $120 million and I was already very well off and I knew 10 percent of the workforce was going to be laid off, I would not take the bonus. Do you have a better answer than that? The one you offered is not going to work.

Obviously your friend is just looking for an excuse to vote for Brown. He can't actually come up with a reason to vote FOR Brown, so he's coming up with some lame reason to vote AGAINST Whitman. Does your friend even understand how business works? If she could make the company more efficient, that means more money for the shareholders. She should have got a bonus if that is what she did! Ask your friend this...would you vote for a governor that could improve the state government efficiency despite cutting the government payroll by 10%? He's a moron if he wouldn't. If he would, then obviously he should vote for Whitman.

Jerry Brown created the unions and their pension mess back in 1978.

Ann Coulter talked about the Jerry Brown and the DILL Act

I wouldn't take it either. I guess it is a matter of principle. Now, that is conditioned on the fact that for several years I would have been making $750,000 a year and banking it.

We have a serious problem in this country when people don't see something wrong in that bonus. It leads to candidates like Brown. I'd say if you don't want Brown (and worse), a few more pricipled people is in order.

Actions have consequences.

The first thing out of his mouth is going to be, “She should not have accepted it.”

You are not helping me. Is the ad that is running true? If not, tell me.

Whether it’s true or not is immaterial. I’ve had a business for many years and some years I laid people off and other years I hired people. What I made in those years was not a choice between ‘Do I take the money home as profit or pay it out as wages?” The employment decisions are made based on how much work there is and whether more employees are needed to maximize profit for the business. If there are too many employees, the business does poorly and all of the employees are put at risk. That’s called management. Under your friend’s criteria, no one that has managed a business would be able to run for public office.

No, that is not true. That is a false assumption on your part.

Tell your friends that Brown created the Unions and their Pension mess in 1978.

Also inform them that Jerry has been working for years to KILL Prop 13 another GOOD thing that was created in 1978.

No, that is not true. That is a false assumption on your part.

It's either that, or he's a bleeding heart liberal moron. I was trying to give him the benefit of the doubt. I still think that even if you could prove that Whitman did not take a bonus when 10% of eBay was laid off, he would simply find some other reason to not vote for her. Again, ask him ISN'T THAT EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANT THE GOVERNOR TO DO? CUT WASTE? CUT SPENDING? If you can do that in the private sector, you SHOULD get a bonus. And if you can do that in the public sector, you should elected. Period.

Well, my gut reaction is that cops are bureaucrats and tax collectors with guns, but that isn’t really fair. Botom line for me is that I don’t want to work until I’m 70 so a cop can retire at 50 and live off a fat pension in Idaho. If a 401k is good enough for the private sector, give them to all the unions, exempting no one. The economic state of CA is disastrous and no one should get off with untouched benefits, even the police.

MAYBE you are naive.

Again, Brown is a liar and fraud and not Whitman.

You were inferring Brown was interested in solving the UNION pension mess along with the Environ wacko mess. Brown is the SEIU, Cal Nurses Union ,and all the radical union front man . They are spending millions to get him elected . He created the UNION mess back in 1978.

It’s as I suspected. I don’t know of any ceo who can
set their salary, and I don’t know of any who is paid
a $120 million salary, even with bonuses. Too many
times when one hears of a ceo making millions of dollars,
you don’t hear that part of that is based on stock options.

Options tend to come with an expiration date, and
if Whitman was quitting, then she might have had to sell
her options that had vested. The company did well when
she was ceo, seems to me she earned the profits she made
off those options.
