Pentagon: Elements in Pakistani Intelligence Agency Support Terror
Fox News ^ | October 07, 2010 | FoxNews.com

The Pentagon acknowledged Thursday that some parts of Pakistan's intelligence agency are cooperating with terrorist groups as a new report suggests Inter-Service Intelligence agents are working to undermine U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan. Spokesman Col. Dave Lapan said the Pakistan intelligence service as an organization does not support terrorism, but some elements within the ISI are providing assistance to terrorists.

U.S. officials have raised concerns about whether some members of the ISI "might be interacting with terrorist organizations in ways that aren't consistent with what the government and military are doing," Lapan said. Lapan was responding after a report in The Wall Street Journal that suggested the ISI is pushing the Taliban to keep fighting in Afghanistan, undermining efforts by the Pentagon to end the war. The Journal quotes an Afghan commander in Kunar province who said the ISI is still urging and paying Taliban to fight NATO soldiers. Pakistan's top military leadership is working to correct the problem, Lapan said, but "like any large organization, change is difficult and comes slowly."

"The ISI has done a great deal in fighting terrorism. Some have said they probably have killed more terrorists than any other organization. But we also have some concerns with the strategic focus of the ISI," Lapan said. Lapan spoke as U.S.-Pakistani relations remain strained over the effort to end the Taliban's use of Pakistan as a safe haven to launch attacks into Afghanistan.

The surprise would be if the Pentagon is really just figuring this out.

How can we as a country make the same, literally the same, mistakes that doomed our efforts in SE Asia only a few decades ago?

Because we have bad leadership, even worse than Vietnam. If Fist was King for a day, we would bring our heros home, and if any of these 7th century barbarians dare hit us again, a neutron bomb would be the answer, after the second one they would take care of the taliban problem themselves....

...the real news is that the WH has allowed the Pentagon acknowledge it publicly.... ....but then again.... ....it is October....

Look for a major terrorist incident on or before the election, which Obama will blame upon the Republicans stirring up the Muzzies with their hateful rhetoric.

Let me guess: it’s the Muslim elements within the ISI?

Easy man. I was making light of the fact that it was finally officially acknowledged. I didn’t mean it as an attack. I do think only us news junkies will know what it means. The sheep want to know who is on American Idol. I think it’s probably not a good move to do the work that needs to be done against the ISI in such a public fashion. We just radicalized a few more of them.

>>The CIA could have told the Pentagon this well before 9/11/2001.

Uh yeah, like back in 1978...

my question is why CiC allowed it?

He's in a hurry.

American actions were "obviously" linked to Obama's decision to set a timetable for leaving Afghanistan. The US leader had "jumped the gun" and now "the Americans are in a hurry."

Other than incorporating Pakistan into its territory, China needs to do little to expand its influence in Islamabad. The generals there trust Beijing more than Washington and have done so for half a century.

Gentlemen, please. No more criticism of Pakistan, our quaint and colorful ally. They have threatened to cut off their major export to the West.

i.e., surly convenience store clerks. With a snap of their nicotine-stained fingers, Palkistan's leaders could cut off late-night milk supplies amd last-minute lottery tickets, throwing the US into total chaos.

BTW, it’s now pronounced POCK-ee-stahn, according to oiur POTUS who spent many a happy vacation there. Speaking of which, isn’t our fearlessly ineligible leader about due for another break? It’s been literally days now since he has left his wearisome burdens of state for some much needed rest.

Damun, beat me to it. LOL. Not funny but to say this is like saying Ice Cream cones melt in the hot sun, or moderate muslims are only moderate muslims until they become radical terrorist muslims...eh but we’re only at war with Al Qaeda, all seven of them.

Dang, I’m shucked, whowoulda thunk the Pakistanis support terror?

Well, I’m positively sure that none of the aid money sent to their military has ended up in the hands of jihadis killing Americans.

I’m sure our government would never countenance anything like that.
