A spokesman for three-time Tour de France winner Alberto Contador says the cyclist tested positive for a banned steroid during this year's race.

Contador's publicist released a statement Wednesday saying the substance, identified as clenbuterol, was found in a test taken on July 21. Contador has blamed food contamination as the only possible explanation for the positive test.

Clenbuterol is not a steroid. It was developed to treat asthma, but actually was found to also induce muscle growth. It’s become a performance enhancing drug for humans and has been used for horse racing.

clenbuterol isn’t a steroid...it’s a bronchodilator. It would theoretically allow him to breathe easier. It is popular with body builders as a fat burner...but I can’t see a tour cyclist needing it for that in the midst of the race.

There have been instances of clenbuterol contamination in food...beef and pork farmers will feed it to their animals to keep tham from getting too fat.

Ok, now I can see that as a possibility.

I say ban professional cycling for five years and give a lifetime ban to all the cheats. The cyclists make MLB look positively pure by comparison.

“It’s become a performance enhancing drug for humans and has been used for horse racing.”

Not a good idea with its cardiac side effects.

Note what the article says about the minute quantity traced, far below the threshold needed for a WADA sanction, or that which would have any performance effect. This makes the contanimation explanation plausible.

And when can we expect his Tour title to be taken away?
