49ers fire offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye

The San Francisco 49ers have fired offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye, according to a league source.

The team announced the firing Monday, one day after it fell to 0-3 and was beaten 31-10 at Kansas City. San Francisco has scored 38 points, second fewest in the NFL behind Carolina.

Mike Johnson will move from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator. Offensive assistant Jason Michael will take over as quarterbacks coach.

49ers coach Mike Singletary and Raye have not seen eye-to-eye about the reasons for the team's struggling offense.

The 49ers were considered a favorite in the NFC West this year, but their offense has stalled, plagued by turnovers and a weak running game. The team passed on several quarterbacks to stay with starter Alex Smith, who has been inconsistent during the team's three losses.

Raye, who came under fire following the 49ers' 31-6 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1, took responsibility for the team's problems on offense.

The 49ers showed progress in a 25-22 Monday night loss to the New Orleans Saints on Sept. 20, but Sunday's one-sided loss to the Chiefs put the focus back on Raye.

Johnson, who was in his second season as quarterback coach, served as the Baltimore Ravens wide receivers coach from 2006 to 2007, and as the Atlanta Falcons quarterbacks coach for three years, where he worked with Michael Vick.

No big surprise here; the 49ers have unquestionably been the biggest disappointment in the first three weeks and Raye was sitting squarely on the hot seat. If they don't improve pretty quickly, Singletary himself could be in trouble as well.

Is Alex Smith going to be out of there?

Geesh, does anyone know what happened to this team? I love Singletary and would hate to see him lose his job.

But they were undefeated in preseason - no? Hopes were so high...

They were down 31-3 with seconds remaining, but still wanted a touchdown. Josh Morgan caught it, but landed pretty hard out of bounds, and looked like he was seriously injured. Singletary seemed oblivious to it.

They’ve fallen a long way from Super Bowl days and have been at the bottom of the league since 03.

I know, but I thought Mike S was bringing them back. Last year, looked very promising. I hope they’re not bucking Mike’s tough love approach.

As I Cowboys fan, I couldn’t be happier than to see the Niners struggle.

They have given up 31, 25, and 31 points. Maybe they should fire the D Coordinator too.

Lets see now, that’s Eight (8) offensive coordinators in the last seven years? That will work. Not.

Considering they gave up 457 yards in total offense, maybe the Defensive Coordinator should have gone as well?

The Panthers need to fire the whole coaching staff. They are one of the sloppiest teams I've seen in a while, on both sides of the ball. They are also not quite as good as their 0-3 record indicates.

That was just painful and embarrassing to watch yesterday. It was like they were playing under water in slow motion. Boring and painful.

Now get rid of Alex Smith.

I think the Panthers are the team Homer Simpson was referring to when he said, "I've seen teams suck before, but those were the suckiest bunch of sucks that ever sucked."

Lifetime 49ers fan here.. I don`t know whether firing Raye will help, but the needed to do something with that offense. They need to give up on the Alex Smith experiment and put a real QB behind center. They`re in bad shape.

You don't know what "sloppy" is until you see the lowlights of yesterday's Giants-Titans game.

The Giants had 470+ yards of total offense and managed to contain Chris Johnson for most of the game, and they really should have won. But they had critical turnovers (including two inside the Titans' 10 yard-line), 11 penalties (including FIVE personal fouls and a penalty in their own end zone that resulted in a safety), missed two field goals, and couldn't cover kick returns for anything.

The Giants completely outplayed the Titans, but lost the game by a 29-10 score. WTF is that?

I was wondering if the 49ers` players had other plans for their Sunday and the game was just getting in the way.

Tell me about it; hideous doesn’t even begin to describe the litany of mistakes the Giants made all day long. Right now they look as sloppy and undisciplined as they were when Coughlin first took over the team.
