Not only did he endorse her, he did it from his hospital bed at Walter Reed. And then he sent her the maximum possible donation allowable under law.
Second look at the GOP establishment?
Christine ODonnells message resonated with the voters, and to the surprise of many she defeated Congressman Mike Castle, who many of us thought would win. The primary is over and in my opinion it is time for voters to join hands and support Christine ODonnell. The Delaware seat is important and the winner in November could well determine whether Republicans or Democrats control the Senate.
I find many of the attacks on ODonnell to be personal and lacking in balance and fairness. If her campaign wishes I am willing to assist in a limited way since I am still a patient at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. I will have surgery Monday, September 27.
Pretty great, and all the more so because his name is now being dropped by lefties like E.J. Dionne in the latest iteration of the eternal “Republicans of yesteryear were much nicer/smarter/better than Republicans of today” meme. Actual quote from Dionne’s hand-wringer last week lamenting the downfall of moderate, centrist conservatives like, er, Ronald Reagan, I guess:
Castle’s defeat at the hands of Christine O’Donnell, a perennial candidate who may be the least qualified Senate nominee anywhere in the country, does indeed mark the collapse of the Republican Party not only of Nelson Rockefeller and Tom Dewey but also of Bob Dole and Howard Baker…
Will moderate voters take a chance on the preposterous proposition that this Republican Party will turn around and work in a calm, bipartisan way with President Obama? Or will they use their ballots to wake up the Republicans and tell them that they need more Mike Castles, and fewer extremists?
Bob Dole’s presumptive answer: More “extremists.” I googled around to see if he and Castle are old friends, thinking that this endorsement might be a message aimed at getting MC’s attention. I didn’t find anything, but they’ve both been Republicans (specifically, moderate Republicans) active in government for so many years that I probably missed the evidence. Dole’s been out of the public eye for long enough that his support probably won’t make much difference to centrist Republicans in Delaware disgruntled about O’Donnell, but every little push towards getting RINOs to line up behind her helps. It’s a welcome gesture, and one for which I shall congratulate him at our next RINO Beltway cocktail party.
According to one of Jim Geraghty’s sources, the odds that Castle’s going to jump back in are now up to 50/50. Which, as I and others are increasingly convinced, could be the very best thing he can do for O’Donnell.
Thanks, Bob.
Now that she has the RINO endorsement, she should be an easy shoo-in.
Oh please....Dole did a GREAT thing!! COD is 100% censervative.....Dole cold have gone with Castle, yet he didn’t!! And Castle is Dole’s GENERATION and SEX!!
Good for Bob Dole. This is an important gesture, and given his circumstances one which must be heartfelt.
It is the Viagra talking.
"That rotten Bush guy Karl Rove hates O'Donnell. Maybe she's not so bad. And, hey, that nice Bob Dole -- he likes her! He's one of those old-fashioned Republicans, back before they all got nasty and stupid like Bush. Looks like the right people like her and dislike her; I guess I will vote for her."
I hope Bob Dole gets better soon. I remember when he was the nominee toward the end of the campaign when it was clear he could not win he continued to run hard and help save some Congressional seats.
It’s not Viagra. Bob Dole is someone I have long admired, and I think he got short shrift when he ran for president. If it weren’t for Dole, much legislation would never have become law. He was able to work both sides of the bench, along with Reagan. It’s clear he gave this endorsement some thought, along with what’s currently going on in Washington. There’s a reason he endorsed O’Donnell. She’s the better person, if not the better candidate.
Had not before heard that Bob Dole “Bob Dole” was in the hospital.
A serious war hero who I would admire above all if it were not for his horrific campaign for President and his RINO record in the Senate.
The best part of his 1996 Campaign was his wife Elizabeth who was as awesome and beautiful as a Senator could possibly be.
At least he had the integrity to resign which is quite unlike most other aspirants for the holy place.
This is another shock in a period of shocks, but in reality, this is an incredible endorsement.
This is a true, out of the blue, rino endorsement with money to boot, it will help some in raw numbers, but more importantly, it is so interesting and stunning, and kind of odd, that it should generate a lot of positive publicity and speculation, and cause a few in the media to lighten up in their constant attacks on O’Donnell.
How could this not be a big positive? This especially helps her if Castle runs, it is a big signal to a few points worth of mushy republicans.
Bob Dole has risen to the occasion several times. He’s a good guy. His big mistake was to take bad advice in the run against clinton. His advisers told him to move left, and he did. But the real Bob Dole is fairly conservative, I believe, and it comes out from time to time still.
As I recall, he played a solid role during the chad wars, which was very helpful in putting down the massive cheating that the Florida Dems tried to impose on the election.
Why is Dole in the hospital?
It is a joke. Lighten up.
Thank you, Sen. Dole!
Prayers up for Bob Dole’s health. He is a fantastic and admirable American.
Remember a story from a family friend: They were both at a dinner or function of some sort with press coverage. He told the family friend, “Let’s start a rumor that we are having an affair and then run around denying it.”
Dittos. Dole ALWAYS put country first.
Good for Bob Dole...we know what Reagan’s advise was regarding talking against other republicans...looks as if Dole understands and grasp that pretty darn well...
Good for war-vet Bob Dole, a patriot who loves this country, RINO or not.
For the first time in my life, I’m proud of Bob Dole. Never thought I’d see the day.
Prayers up for Bob, that his surgery goes well.
He is a true American patriot.
