Do we stand with Japan? And would this be a good time, to start that trade war?
I go with "b".
gotta hit them in the wallet.
I think the entire incident was a Chinese provocation to test the Kan administration. Neither side can back down at this point.
Let them work out their so called historical differences.
This will hurt us massively.
Obama, of course, will take the wrong side.
Sun Tzu:
"If we know that our own men are in a condition to attack, but are unaware that the enemy is not open to attack, we have gone only halfway towards victory. If we know that the enemy is open to attack, but are unaware that our own men are not in a condition to attack, we have gone only halfway towards victory. If we know that the enemy is open to attack, and also know that our men are in a condition to attack, but are unaware that the nature of the ground makes fighting impracticable, we have still gone only halfway towards victory. Hence the experienced soldier, once in motion, is never bewildered; once he has broken camp, he is never at a loss. Hence the saying: If you know the enemy and know yourself, your victory will not stand in doubt; if you know Heaven and know Earth, you may make your victory complete."
If it comes down to it, we’re rather bound by the US/Japan defense/security agreements and treaties of 1949, 1951 and 1954 to take Japan’s side.
They’re not allowed to have a standing army aside from homeland defense capabilities on the premise that the US would provide security for them in international conflicts.
Ironically,
It’s 3:00 AM.
That Idiot in the White House is REALLY screwing up foreign policy, ISN’T he????
We are perceived as less than a third rate power under that moron and our allies, Japan,Israel, etc, will pay the price.
Treaties are essentially promises. How is Obama doing with fulfilling promises lately?
We are watching it here on NHK evening news in Tokyo. It is getting tit for tat now.
Now the Red Chinese are starting to cancel China-Japan exchanges and they are still turning a blind eye to the Communist Chinese crowds being whipped up in Shanghai and Peking, etc. 5:40 a.m. Washington D.C. time Monday
More Kan than Obama, I’m thinking. The ChiComs already know they can bully Obama because they own the US economy. Besides, if the Obama didn’t support the Brits in the recent Falklands controversy, who in their right mind would expect him to support Japan this time around?
Kan is an unknown quantity. He is still shaking out his new cabinet and recovering from Ozawa’s attempted takeover. The Chinese want to get him, and Japan, firmly on the defensive so they can increase their encroachment on those islands, among other things.
We have tens of thousands of American military here in Japan, all the way down to Okinawa (not to mention something like 70,000 non-US military in Japan--American citizens), so it is not just an issue of Japan alone bearing any brunt of provocative Red Chinese Hegemony and Brinksmanship and "going it alone".
Now the Red Chinese paper Huanqui tonight is sounding off to the tune that "OKINAWA IS ALSO NOT JAPANESE TERRITORY and has been stolen during the time period of Emperor Meiji". That kind of CCPcrap.
They are ramping it up it seems.
I don’t have any real feeling for how Kan is going to react on this. He’s a lib in the economic sense, but he is also pretty nationalistic, as are most Japanese men of his age group.
My gut says he is not going to give in easily, but I also do not see him making any moves serious moves like sending naval reinforcements to the area or even more Coast Guard ships.
Bilateral trade between Japan and China is huge, and both sides would get hurt in a trade war, but most of the things Japan buys from China it can get elsewhere.
Interesting times...
Well, Obama’s anti-American foreign policies are encouraging our enemies.
Now would be a good time for Ambassador Bolton or Governor Palin to come to East Asia, I'd say--particularly to the camp of our allies. I know Armitage is already kicking Peking in the shins, saw him on Japanese TV just today.
I expect this to be the topic of the 2100 NHK analysis program, but I will tune in from 2045 to see what’s shown.
The newspaper assertion that Okinawa is Chinese territory, which could have never been published without CCP approval, is a significant escalation both because there is absolutely no way any Japanese administration could ever even contemplate ceding it and because Okinawa is home so much of the US Forces in this neck of the woods.
Like it or not, I think Japan is going to have to, at least, consider moving naval assets closer and increasing their patrol plane profiles. I expect Chinese commercial and military vessels to operate more aggressively in the near term future.
I am thinking that China has some huge internal problems and like Obama, wishes to distract or redirect the debate to cover those problems.
I’m with China - drill baby drill. Japan’s socialism and anti-capitalistic moves of the past 20 years have reduced its moral authority in every arena. We owe them nothing, they need to adjust to the new Asia. Given a choice between an Obama America/Japan and China, all I can say is “Please pass the Rosetta Stone, Mandarin edition.”
