They’re trying to get their numbers up so they can charge the advertisers more. It would have better to hang up on them and save your cash.

I thought about that, but they also have to pay for paper, print, and some poor schlep to deliver it at 0 dark 30. I can't imagine it would boost their ad revenue enough to compensate for that, but if you can show me the numbers I'll cancel.

"Not too long ago they were advertising a 1-yr., 7-day-a-week subscription for %75.00. That’s .21 cents a day..."

Say what?

I used to get frequent offers of cheap subscriptions to newspapers — or offers for “no-obligation” free months. I told the telephone solicitors that I was not interested under any circumstances. If I still had a wood stove to fuel, or a puppy that needed house training, or if I were considering buying a parakeet, I might have considered the free months.

It's all about boosting the “paid circulation” numbers, to get more ad revenue.

You can probably find some useful coupons and if you haven't already...buy a bird.

You just increased their circulation (albeit by ONE) which in turn makes their advertising medium more attractive to advertisers.

They win.

If it goes straight from your doorstep to the trash, they lose.

Actually, BOYCOTT any company that advertises there. That’ll learn them.

I’ll “buy” when it is free.

Make your own charcoal chimney, charcoal starter:

Empty gallon can, coffee can, paint can -

Punch holes in sides around both ends with triangular can opener (”church key”)

Take off ends with a can opener

Burns LA Times, NY Times, etc just as good as store bought model

Buy beer or ammo with the money you saved

I get offers from them a few times a year and I only make sure to send them back the postage paid envelope.

I thought this would make them go out of business sooner

They probably have a great (for them) pricing scheme in store for you after the year is over. You can unsubscribe, but they won't make it easy for you. AOL was famous for that.

I’ve been doing that for a long time with the following address information:

Herman Munster

For the same reason the internet is free. Many newspapers are free with advertising paying the bills.

Sorry bad idea to subscribe. Better idea is to get your friends to stop subscribing to the LA Times, Newsweek, Time, or other leftist rags.

Do you have any numbers, though? I can see it either way — that the cost of one more paper subscription outweighs any added ad revenue, or that the ad revenue is the greater amount. But I don’t know the numbers. Can you help me there?

I have subscribed to the Sunday Edition for $0.19 per week for a year. This Sunday paper is regularly $2.50 at the newstand. I told the lady who called that I thought there was no way they could make any money on this and I thought this would make them go out of business sooner so I couldn't refuse the offer.
That's nothing. I cancelled my regular rate subscription 2yrs ago. They called me and made me an offer of $10 A YEAR all 7 days. The year passed and I got the same deal for renewal.

Their ad rates are based on the amount of subscribers...Ads (not subscriptions) are what keeps newspapers, mags, etc. in business.

I never understood why they charge for a newspaper when they have so much advertising.

I think that's exactly why you are seeing this. The advertisers rates are determined by the 'paid subscriptions.'

One of their largest sources of income is from preprints and that revenue is all driven by number of copies inserted.

When San Jose Mercury called me, I told them, I am environmentalist, thanks to your newspaper, one San Jose Mercury newspaper will destroy one tree, one paper mill will release enough poisonous gas to deplete precious Ozone layer. Each paper distributer vehicle will release CO2, which will destroy earth. All my knowledge came from your Newspaper. So to protect earth I refuse to buy San Jose Mercury.
:LOL

That was my impression since they were willing to mail it to London.
