Sarah Palin effect sees record number of women stand as Republican candidates

Mrs Palin is not running for office, but her vice presidential candidacy in 2008 as an anti-abortion, mother-of-five from a conventional background has played a central role in persuading more women with similar outlooks to step into the limelight.

Often controversial, outspoken and resolutely Right-wing, Republican women are beginning to overhaul the image of the party.

After its heavy losses in 2008 to the Democrats, the Grand Old Party was written off as too male, too old and too out of touch.

A record 140 women have competed in Republican primaries for the House of Representatives and the Senate this year, almost double the number in 2008. Once the primaries are completed in mid-September, the final tally of female candidates is also set to exceed previous levels, according to party officials.

Mrs Palin and others, like Michele Bachmann and Marsha Blackburn, both relative newcomers to the House of Representatives, have provided role models for conservative women that didn't use to exist, she said.

"They are not clones of Sarah Palin, but they have far more in common with her than with Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi or Barbara Boxer," said Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B Anthony List, which supports anti-abortion female candidates, referring to the Democratic Party's three leading female liberals.

"They tend to come from traditional backgrounds. They have had kids, maybe gone back to work and are now in a third act of life running for office," said Mrs Dannenfelser, who paid tribute to the feminist movement of the 70s and 80s for breaking down barriers that conservative women have taken much longer to traverse.

"There's an unsettling of the political apple cart," Mrs Dannenfelser said. "Sarah Palin kicked the door open and a lot of women started going through.

“There’s an unsettling of the political apple cart,”

It’s called getting rid of the “good old boy” network at the RNC. AKA getting rid on RINOs.

Meet Charlotte Bergmann http://www.charlottebergmann.com/, one of the 140 GOP candidates. US 9th District, TN, Memphis. Incumbent is white, jewish, lawyer, obama butt kisser Steve Cohen, who thinks Jesus was a community organizer like 0, and while he ‘thinks’ like a black woman WON’T debate his opponent who is a black woman.

Female Conservative Republicans have more spine, guts, and gonads than 99% of the males. The Republican Party seems to be a good-ole-boy gathering of Eunuchs and that includes the RNC and the leadership.

"There isn't really a place for moderate Republican women on the national scene at the moment, which is a shame," said Erin Vilardi of the non-partisan White House Project. "To include more women the party needs to open up even more."

Uh, I think the writer has the parties mixed up. It's the Dem party that won't allow moderates. If you're not a pro-abort, you don't stand a chance. And Republicans are dealing with moderates like Snowe and Collins. When will the Democrat party become a big tent party? Don't hold your breath.

Meet Susana Martinez, Hispanic candidate for governor in New Mexico running against Richardson's Lt. Governor Diane Denish. Today's ABQ Journal poll has her capturing 20% of the Hispanic vote (traditionally Democratic) and an increasing number of independents.

It is a tectonic shift when the Telegraph is publishing positive articles about Sarah Palin. This is two days in a row! Wow.

This is great.

Really, it’s time the Republican party gave women the reins. We can’t do much worse than they’ve done in the last 4 years.

I’d bet we’ll do much better.

Not really - the Telegraph is London's conservative paper.

I love all the hope and optimism in those faces.

When Palin holds her head up, her expression shows positive regard for Americans. You can see her reaching out to them in her eyes and body language.

When Obama holds his head up, his disdain for Americans is evident. His expression is inward, self-aggrandizing, and snobby.

It’s obvious he’s looking down his nose at us.

Interesting! I hadn't taken note. You have a great mind and good eye!

I checked, the writer, Alex Spillius, is stationed in Washinton, D.C.

Boy oh boy, you’ve said it all, dear Melian.

Sarah’s beautiful, girl-next-door face, hopeful, postive and patriotic, with the highest regard for her audience truly comes through, just like you noted.

I’ve always thought his uptilted chin alone was showing us his sneering disdain for all things American, but I like your words much better!

His stance is exactly like the despot Mussolini.

Sarah Palin endorsed her in the primary and appeared with her in Albuquerque NM:

"I’m proud to endorse Susana Martinez for governor of New Mexico. Susana is a strong pro-family, pro-life, pro-Second Amendment, pro-development fiscal conservative who’s going to fight the corruption that’s plagued her state and bring transparency, accountability, and renewed fiscal vitality to New Mexico."
