At some point, probably after one of the traditional Muslim on Muslim bloodbaths, Sufism will become the leader of an “Islamic Reformation”, one that will drop most everything except the Koran, make lots of noise about how badly misunderstood the Koran has been and why Christians, Jews, and Muslims, should all be a part of the new and improved Islam which they will declare to be the “final one true faith” as opposed to the "misunderstood one true faith" Islam turned into after the prophet died (at least that’ll be their line).

When and if that happens, look out, because there are hordes of Christians In Name Only as well as Jews without Judaism who will flock to the new faith along with the mass of spiritualism freaks who have no religion other than themselves. If I'm right, it's decades away, but it fits nicely with some other prognostications that are far better known than mine. Particularly since Sufis could work hand in hand with Turkey to recreate a new Turkish dominated Ottoman Empire encompassing everything from the Middle East to China given the Muslim nature of the 'stans' that were formerly part of the Soviet Union.

Regards

I agree. I know flakes of Christian and Jewish background who are into sufism and I think you’ll find an increasing number of movie stars and other celebrity idiots taking it up. To them, it’s Unitarianism with finger cymbals (although orthodox sufis aren’t really any much different from other Muslims - but the celebrities’ mental image of sufism is based on the charmingly ethnic whirling dervish branches).

However, I don’t think they will be able to drop the rest of Islam, and in fact, I don’t think they really want to. Actually, if these modern Sufis posed any threat to main-line Islam, it would be attacking them...and it’s not.

Sufi islam is just as militant as the rest of them. Al fuqra (sheik Gilani) is sufi, just as an example.
