JERUSALEM - While Benjamin Netanyahu has publicly blessed the Palestinian Authority's return to direct negotiations, a combination of deadlines, timetables and financial factors could turn the renewed peace process into a political curse for the Israeli prime minister.
Netanyahu spent this past weekend with members of his inner cabinet crunching the political and financial numbers associated with what the Israeli leader has himself termed "making the painful choices for peace."
Both Yediot Aharonot and Yisrael Hayom reported that Deputy Prime Minister Dan Meridor, the most dovish member of the inner cabinet, suggested that Netanyahu announce Israel will continue to build only within those settlements in Judea and Samaria that will eventually be absorbed into the Jewish state at the end of the peace process.
According to some news reports, Netanyahu is prepared to relinquish up to 90 percent of Judea and Samaria, which would entail the uprooting of as many as 50,000 settlers. The Palestinians, however, are demanding a complete freeze on renewed building in Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem, as well as restarting negotiations based on former prime minister Ehud Olmert's offer of relinquishing 97 percent of Judea and Samaria. The PA has also demanded portions of the coastal plain between Beit Shemesh and Modiin, which were part of Jordan before the Six-Day War.
In the interim, an economic time bomb is ticking in Judea and Samaria. Israel's Channel 10 reported that hundreds of families are either on the verge of bankruptcy or are already insolvent, as they have been paying both local taxes and mortgages on homes that might never be built as a result of the current settlement construction freeze.
The government has yet to create a formal fund that would compensate the families and construction companies affected by the freeze. In addition, the Israeli government would have to allocate a minimum of $10-20 billion for a planned withdrawal that would see 25-50,000 settlers relocated inside the Green Line.
"There are a number of young couples with children who literally have no place to go," a Gush Etzion resident told The Jewish Press. "They don't have enough money to buy an apartment in Central Israel because the prices are prohibitive. And some put down money on homes that may never be built.
"What's also sad is that the forced withdrawal from Gaza and the government's stated effort to withdraw from portions of Judea and Samaria has put a virtual stop to American aliyah to Judea and Samaria."

Many Jews, especially American Jews believed that Netanayu was different, stronger than other Israeli leaders. What happened to him?

Nothing happened to Netanyahu; he was always very weak. He could speak very nicely but he could perform nothing. On political issues with the Palestinians, he is one of the weakest Prime Ministers we ever had.
Ehud Olmert talked to the Palestinians very nicely but gave them nothing in the end. Netanyanu has talked tough but is offering them a lot. Netanyahu was always good on theory, but always fails on the practical test. Land for Talks - that is what he is going to do. People still trust his image and not his real performance. They are going to be deeply disappointed.
Netanyahu was elected to prevent the creation of the Palestinian state, to produce something utterly different. But right away, he collapsed under pressure from Obama and declared his support for a Palestinian state. This is a complete collapse.
