The Border: The Sunshine State's attorney general not only supports Arizona in court but has proposed a law tweaking the objections and going even further. Punishing criminals and protecting citizens sounds good to us.
Florida attorney general and gubernatorial candidate Bill McCollum isn't waiting for the final word on Arizona's court-challenged SB1070. He's sponsoring a Florida version that deals with the legal objections while ending the concept of sanctuary cities and providing for enhanced penalties when illegal aliens commit crimes.
McCollum will no doubt be accused of political motives and opportunism. He will be accused of being racist.
But if anything needs to be debated and decided in the crucible of democracy in an election year, it should be whether states can protect their borders and their citizens if the federal government won't meet its constitutional and legal obligation to do so.
Like Arizona's law, McCollum's proposed statute announced last week, to be sponsored in the Florida legislature by state Rep. William Snyder, would require police officers to verify a suspect's immigration status during all lawful stops, detentions and arrests when reasonable suspicion exists.
McCollum's office said the Florida proposal is strengthened against "potential constitutional challenges."
It addresses the objections the federal judge raised in the Arizona case by better clarifying the "reasonable suspicion" circumstances in which officers should check immigration status.
The law differs from the Arizona law in that it would allow judges to consider immigration status when setting bail.
Illegal immigrants would also face stiffer criminal sentences than legal residents who committed the same crime.

Seriously, good for Florida.
Ho hum. McCollum blew it when he came out against the AZ law along with La Raza Rubio.
Please note: Charlie Crist is the most disgusting piece of human debris to ever spend endless hours on a tanning bed.
McCollum initially opposed the AZ law. Shame on IBD for not disclosing.
Next week I will vote for Scott.
So since he was originally against he should be forbidden from changing his mind and doing the right thing?
Have you ever changed your mind when you had inaccurate or incomplete info?
McCollum is for Florida state’s rights and you seem to be against McCollum. Where does that seem to leave you?
“Next week I will vote for Scott”.
and next week you will also vote for a crook, IMO. Too bad he didn’t have the credibility to show up for the last debate with McCollum. I love it when they debate to an empty chair.
Maybe the IBD staff didn’t know that and I bet many didn’t especially those who who are not from Florida, especially someone like myself
God forbid someone sees the light and changes his or her mind about something.
Funny how everyone is acting like this law is a done deal in Florida. Even if the FL House and Senate pass a bill, it must be signed by Charlie “Suntan” Crist. Fat chance of that happening. He’s trying to appeal to the dems right now. Somehow it might be possible to override his veto but I’m guessing Atty. Gen. Flip Flop hopes that won’t happen. Which is precisely why he could come out of his RINO shell a bit on this one.
I wonder if Brady Bill McColllum still thinks it’s ok to keep guns out of citizens’ hands.
Scales have been shown to fall from eyes every great once in a while. I can’t say if that’s the case in FL, but I’m in AZ. I’m a little preoccupied.
The “Scott is a crook” mantra has come from McCullum. I;ve seen no evidence that it’s true. McCullum even said on the house floor that the Medicade rules were complex and easily misunderstood. McCullum on the other hand is a liar (proved in Scotts commercial), and an oppurtunist.
McCollum changed his mind when the polls changed.
I suppose you believe Bill Gates belongs in prison as well. Like Bill Gates, all HCA had to do to avoid problems was donate heavily to the democrat party.
And I suppose you will vote for a 30 year professional politician, one of the breed who have collectively screwed up my country.
Is there any doubt as to who owes the most in political favors, McCollum or Scott?
‘it must be signed by Charlie Suntan Crist.’
What do you mean, the legislature will have no more regular sessions while Crist is Governor.
That's unfortunate!
It’s disingenuous to say that McCollum was against the AZ bill until polls made him change his mind. He said he was against a bill for Florida similiar to the first AZ bill that was worded that people could be stopped and asked for documentation without prior cause to be stopped.
Once the AZ bill wording was changed to allow request of documentation only after prior cause for being stopped he was in support.
In McCollum’s case, it’s just posturing to fend off a serious primary threat.
In Rubio’s case, well, let’s put it this way: Frantzie doesn’t have a sterling track record in his evaluation of candidates.
Vote for a Rino if you wish.
