SANTA FE, N.M. — The showdown between Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid has fascinated the American public for nearly 130 years with its classic, Old West storyline of the frontier lawman hunting down the notorious gunslinger.

As it turns out, the feud isn't completely over.

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson is considering granting a posthumous pardon to Billy the Kid, angering descendants of Garrett who call it an insult to recognize such a violent outlaw.

Three of the late lawman's grandchildren sent a letter to Richardson this week that asked him not to pardon the outlaw, saying such an act would represent an "inexcusable defamation" of Garrett.

Billy the Kid must be pardoned so his vote will not be in dispute.

According to legend, he killed 21 people, one for each year of his life, but the New Mexico Tourism Department puts the total closer to nine.

Only 9 was it? Then a pardon is perfectly in order.

As it turned out PG asked BTK if he was really BTK and when he replied “No Habla Engles”, he knew he couldn’t arrest him, so he had to shoot him. Or so say the legends.

Apparently Richardson wants more than just being called an idiot, so he is trying desperately to make certain everybody knows he is an idiot.

Ya gotta hand it to him for his efforts.

Actually records show(from Garrets testimony)that PG was waiting in a darkened room. The kid entered and noticed someone standing there and asked, "Quien es?" and that is when PG shot him. He didn't ask Billy if it was him because he knew Billy quite well from past associations.

There is some doubt as to whether the guy PG shot was actually Billy, some say it was an unidentified Mexican, but we will never know for sure.

In the 1950s an old timer calling himself Brushy Bill Roberts claimed he was the kid and had been hiding out since Garret killed the mexican and tried to get a pardon at that time. Billy had been promised a pardon by the then acting Governor of New Mexico and was betrayed when he turned himself in, Bushy Bill said he wanted that pardon made good.

The people Billy shot were just as bad as Billy and his gang were, so it is a toss up as to whether he should ever have actually received a Pardon, but he was promised one and if it had gone through the killing would have stopped, instead it ran on for while after that.

Apparently, despite NM’s dead-last 8th grade test scores and 47th poverty ranking positions, and rising violent crime rates, Big Bill still has nothing better to do with his time that try to broker deals with shady characters.

Is there some lull in the overseas capitulation-diplomacy market that compels him to find someone - anyone - to negotiate a losing deal with, even if they are already dead? He's gonna go down in history as the only negotiator in history to lose ground in a settlement to a dead man (130-plus years dead at that!!!).

I suppose lil’ ole harelipped Billy Bonney was the only one left in NM who would sit still long enough to withstand a Richardson diatribe.

Richardson's a stooge. I want my money back. Every penny we ever paid him.
