A good pal of mine just retired from the Forest Circus, although he is still working for the Circus on contract making more $$ than when he was an employee.
He left disgusted with the organization. He’s an ex-marine and started out as a FS smoke jumper and ended up as a minerals/mining specialist...great guy, very professional and can-do attitude, just the kind of attitude that frustrates the heck out of the clods in the organization.
He used to tell me that the only way to advance in the USFS now is to be a woman, preferably of minority status, with a degree in ecology, recreation, or biology. No timber or range management types need apply.

Displaced foreign traveller is utter hogwash, balderdash, or in more contemporary parlance, pure bullshit. If you have a problem or a threat which you won’t call by its right name, how can it be discussed, and how can it be dealt with. The illegal Mexican immigrant is not displaced. He was not lifted up by some space ship and deposited in the United States. He came here illegally. (If he were actually displaced involuntarily, somebody had to displace him, and he should be required to identify them so he can be armed and parachuted at night to his place of origin, and the government of the place of his origin should be notified to keep an eye on him as a redisplaced returnee. He may have had some help getting here, but he is not displaced. He is illegaly here. He is not a wanderer! He is more or less where he wants to be (illegally) involved in patently illegal activity. If we lived in a country in control of itself, we wouldn’t be allowing this perpetual silent invasion. We would just state that if you sneak into this country illegally and get caught we will parachute you into Death Valley naked and unequipped and simply leave your fate to mother nature.
Maybe the answer to this, though is to rename Death Valley as “the Valley of the Displaced Foreign Travellers” and pass a two laws. One would require that “the Valley of the Displaced Foreign Travelers” was no longer part of the United States, and the other, that any displaced foreign travelers make a choice: either be tried as in illegal alien or be labeled a displaced foreign traveler and parachuted into the Valley of the Displaced Foreign Traveller.

There is probably a provision in the Health Care Bill which requires that Displaced Foreign Travellers have the right to vote 96 times in any general or local election and automatically get every benefit that anybody else can get without having to go through any qualifying process—automatic full VA Disability, welfare, medicare, medicaid, federal retirement, and airplane equivalent to Air Force One several times a week, call liquor at the rotgut price, and immunity from anything and everything. Also, should they want to run for office, all qualifications listed in federal or state constitutions would be null and void, and there would be a presumption that the Displaced Foreign Traveller was entitled to carry at least a dozen concealed weapons.

That continues to be the current state of affairs with all things USDA Forest Service. Mt. Rushmore National Monument just got a new superintendant. Guess what? A woman. I have nothing against that, but I heard from friends who work there that there were more qualified males in the running for the position.
When my husband left the Forest Service, we built a sawmill in the Black Hills. We were very successful at it until the Sierra Club and other like groups started filing environmental impact statements and locking up all the timber sales in the area. They literally forced us out of business and we had to shut down a company that employed 125 people. After that, we started a wood products business that has been very good to us and our employees. The saddest part of this is that we import nearly all our raw material and lumber from China, So. America, Canada and eastern Europe. We would prefer buying our material locally, but it just isn’t available because of all the enviro-regulations.
