Stimulus pays rent, utilities for homeless families
Daytona Beach News-Journal (FL) ^ | July 10, 2010 | By DEBORAH CIRCELLI

DAYTONA BEACH -- In a cramped room, smaller than two walk-in closets, Jesus Valentin's two children jump from one bunk bed to the next trying to burn off energy.

He and his fiancee, who is expecting their third child in August, have tried to make their room at the STAR Family Shelter more of a home by decorating with schoolwork from their 3- and 4-year-olds.

But after seven months of eating with about 80 adults and children in the shelter, sharing common spaces such as the living room area and restrooms and showers, they are anxious to get into a house or apartment of their own.

The family is one of five from the shelter that will soon move out under a program with Volusia County that uses federal stimulus dollars to help people who are homeless with rent and utilities.

The Homeless Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing program, paid for by $12.9 million in federal funding statewide under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, has assisted more than 7,000 Floridians, according to state officials.

The prevention program helps low-income individuals or families who are at risk of becoming homeless and need help with rent or utilities. The rapid-re-housing program helps people who are already homeless move into rental housing and provides assistance over a period of months.

He and his fiancee, who is expecting their third child in August....

And I am suppose to feel sorry for these people?

Keep your legs closed and give your present children up for adoption to someone who will give them a good home and THEN we can talk about what help you may or may not need.

15 paragraphs into the story we learn:

“Part of the delay in finding a place, Valentin said, is he has a past criminal record, including felonies from 10 years ago.”

So I'm a white taxpayer with a full-time job and my home has lost 71% value since I bought it in 2005. Is Obama going to help me? The answer to two loan mod requests this year was, "Hell no." And yet another Section 8 family just moved into my neighborhood last week. Is this helping my home value? Answer, "Hell no."

I'm beginning to see what their plan is for all these foreclosed homes.

The article states he's got a felony record from ten years ago and is having trouble finding work. The shelter just paid for her to get her GED. Third child is on the way. So the taxpayers are picking up the tab for the consequences of the decisions made by these two.....and how many millions more just like them.

What a system!

Great “stimulus” plan. Doesn’t create a job, puts more on the public dole, keeps Democrats as the good guys for giving away taxpayers’ money, and builds more bureacracy. A Democrats’ heaven.

Now there's “Economic stability” we can sink or gums into!

Pelosi-like intellectualism; “Unemployment, Food Stamps and Welfare is the very fastest and the best way to get this economy back on track!”

Under those terms, WE”RE BOOMIN’ MAN!

I sold my house in the Phoenix suburbs last year. Same thing started to happen and my neighbors told me accelerated after I had left. It was many of the people they (conveniently) relocated to Phoenix after Hurricane Katrina, so I am told. A lot of renters.

Anyhow houses that were bought new for just under 200k and were selling for 400k during the boom are now selling for 100 to 150k.

At some point the vast majority of Americans need to understand that our gov’t is REWARDING wrong behavior. Until we stop throwing our tax $$$’s and sympathy at this WRONG, IRRESPONSIBLE behavior, we will continue to see more of it.

Why did they go a head and have 3 kids hen they couldn’t even afford themselves? Why is stimulas finds being used to nove them to an apartment that they will most likely lose once the funds run out?Take the kids away and send them on their way.

This is the wrong way to spend stimulus money, so are unemployment benefits. Both forms of benefits just warehouse people and put them on the shelf, instead of putting them into jobs.

Stimulus money should have been done another way. Instead of three trillion dollars of debt to spend on keeping people fed and happy not working or to keep government paid employees and teachers working, we should have declared a big tax holiday on business income, capital gains, inheritance, and given tax breaks to business spending on capital improvements. Plus, speed up government review of EPA, drug approvals, drilling and mining permits, etc.

Let capitalism put people to work and stop passing 2000 page bills on health-care or financial regulation as those bill just cause uncertainty as no business in those sectors wants to spend when it’s uncertain as to how the law will shake out.

I attended a parole hearing where one of the applicants claimed that he wanted release to “take care of the chirren and to be, you know, a dad man, and do the right thing . . .”.

He had 44 children.

Forty four.

His petition was denied, by the way.
