So this thing can pull in 500k barrels of oily water in 10hrs (or just over a million barrels a day) and the hole is leaking at worst 60,000 barrels of oil a day. I don’t know how much oily water you need to take away a barrel of oil, but it seems to me that if this thing was employed early on we wouldn’t be talking about oil hitting the shores.

Yep, to make a long story short, if we had a competent administration intent on fighting this environmental disaster, we could have done it weeks ago.

Saddam Hussein created an even bigger environmental disaster in the Mediterranean in the Gulf War. The Arabs (with help from Europe, the USA and Asian ships ) actually skimmed the oil within a week of it happening.

Obama should have done the same thing WEEKS AGO ! How's that Hopey Changey stuff doing for ya ?

ANYTHING that removes oil from the water would be an improvement over doing nothing. It is the absolute height of criminality that the goobermint has stopped various cleanup efforts due to “environmental concerns”. Obama does not want his crisis diluted. He is evil.

Perhaps not waiting for approval, but waiting for a contract so they can be assured they will get paid.

Look at the bright side. This is not the biggest oil spill ever.

These ten oil spills, all massively larger than the Exxon Valdez, were all smaller new stories, either because the ships were offshore, or dropped their toxic loads in less developed parts of the world. The Valdez spilled 10 million gallons off the coast of Alaska, the smallest spill in the top ten was four times larger.

1.Kuwait - 1991 - 520 million gallons
Iraqi forces opened the valves of several oil tankers in order to slow the invasion of American troops. The oil slick was four inches thick and covered 4000 square miles of ocean.

2.Mexico - 1980 - 100 million gallons
An accident in an oil well caused an explosion which then caused the well to collapse. The well remained open, spilling 30,000 gallons a day into the ocean for a full year.

3.Trinidad and Tobago - 1979 - 90 million
During a tropical storm off the coast of Trinidad and Tobago, a Greek oil tanker collided with another ship, and lost nearly its entire cargo.

4.Russia - 1994 - 84 million gallons
A broken pipeline in Russia leaked for eight months before it was noticed and repaired.

5.Persian Gulf - 1983 - 80 million gallons
A tanker collided with a drilling platform which, eventually, collapsed into the sea. The well continued to spill oil into the ocean for seven months before it was repaired.

6.South Africa - 1983 - 79 million gallons
A tanker cought fire and was abandoned before sinking 25 miles off the coast of Saldanha Bay.

7.France - 1978 - 69 million gallons
A tanker’s rudder was broken in a severe storm, despite several ships responding to its distress call, the ship ran aground and broke in two. It’s entire payload was dumped into the English Channel.

8.Angola - 1991 - more than 51 million gallons
The tanker expolded, exact quantity of spill unknown

9.Italy - 1991 - 45 million gallons
The tanker exploded and sank off the coast of Italy and continued leaking it’s oil into the ocean for 12 years.

10.Odyssey Oil Spill - 1988 - 40 million gallons
700 nautical miles off the cost of Nova Scotia.

I assume whoever skims the oil can sell it and keep the profits. How much is Obama going to tax the profits from the skimmed oil?

"While the ship is ready to work, it still doesn't have approval to engage in the effort,"

I can understand that. Obama has only had a couple of months to consider this decision. We can't expect the smartest occupant of our White House in the country's history to make a decision like whether to clean up the mess without considering whether that would allow a crisis to go to waste.

BECAUSE THE OMAMORONS IN THE EPA "WANT TO ASSURE THAT NONE OF THE WATER THEY DISCHARGE BACK INTO THE GULF (WAIT FOR IT -- READY - HERE IT COMES!!!) DOESN'T CONTAIN ANY OIL!!!"

These people are nucking futs!

Several articles have noted that because of the extensive injection of dispersants (Corexit) approved by the EPA for BP to use, only 2% of the oil spill actually reaches the surface.

The A Whale ship will do a whale of a job on part of the 2% of the oil spill on the surface if the estimates of actual surface oil are correct.

What is wrong with people these days? Why don’t they begin,,and force Obamy to arrest them for cleaning oil off the water?

“While the ship is ready to work, it still doesn’t have approval to engage in the effort,” said Frank Maisano, spokesman for TMT Shipping, the vessel’s owner and operator, in a statement.

I’m willing to bet a large sum that approval will NEVER be given to use this ship!
NEVER!

Then it will get swept under the rug later as the buck is passed and one agency accuses another of echewing responsibility for it, when it is CLEAR the order came from the POTUS to keep it anchored!

This ship was docked in Norfalk, VA for several days before going to the Gulf of Mexico. It would not be starting its journey if request for help was not requested.

It makes absolutely no sense to allow it to dock in the Gulf and let it sit idle doing nothing.

This is a Taiwanese-owned, Liberian-flagged, South Korean built ship that stands 10 stories high, stretches 1,115 feet in length and has a nearly 200-foot beam. It displaces more water than an aircraft carrier.

It was built as a supertanker for transporting oil and iron ore, the six-month-old vessel was refitted in the wake of the BP oil spill with 12, 16-foot-long intake vents on the sides of its bow designed to skim oil off surface waters.

Why would it come to the USA if request for help were not given ?

We better give approval for this tanker to get to work ASAP. The ship can take in up to 500,000 barrels a day, and all the oil gathered so far is only 600,000 barrels.

That it was not deployed to work weeks ago is FREAKINGLY UNBELIEVABLE !!

It was requested to APPEAR that Obama is doing something.
It sat in VA for awhile, now it is sitting in the GOM.
I’m sure it will sit for days after the storm is long gone and then they will pretend to start “ramping up,” only after ABSOLUTE HELL starts being raised as to WHY it is sitting idle.

Then, more beauroCRAZY, red tape, EPA horse-$hit, lawsuits to make sure no wildlife get sucked into the ship along with the oil, a 10-day inspection by the Coast Guard to make sure there are fire extinguishers and life jackets, etc. until another storm comes, then...rinse and repeat all over again.
