By the way, I am happy (and praising God) to say ... I have been unemployed 1 month and I just recieved an excellent job offer in the private sector.
Thank you for pointing this out. I agree with you. Unfortunately, too many conservatives do not, which is why unemployment insurance extensions remain stalled in the Senate.
Conservatives, and therefore most congressional Republicans, have hypocritally opposed the extensions, often using the exact arguments you skewered in your post. I say hypocritically, because they sure as heck don't oppose deficit spending for their pet issues.
This is the first time in history that emergency UI extensions have been filibustered. Doing so just reinforces the worst stereotypes about conservatives and Republicans -- that we don't care about ordinary people, but only care about the wealthy and businesses.

I've personally been rejected, politely for 4 jobs in the past week. OK, perhaps I'm too old to wash cars, or wire re-bar, or work on a shipping dock, but I'm willing. You have to wonder about the wisdom of these teen-aged HR people who could snap up highly trained people for a song, and insist on looking for the still employed that they can steal from a competitor.
And to read what these EMPLOYED droolers gurgle about how I'm aiming too high makes me think VERY unsocial thoughts.
I'm curious. How many homeless does it take to make a starving, furious, bloody-minded army who are past caring about Republican ideology when they get to find out what their kids with pellagra and vitamin deficiencies look like? We are talking survival, here.

Great: 42,000 in May, 13,000 in June. Does this mean we can expect - 16,000 in July? I heard on the radio that we’re likely to lose 200,000 federal jobs this month as well (think Census). A few more months of this Obama “recovery” and we’ll officially be in a Depression!

Harry Reid has played the Republicans like a fiddle on the extensions bill, repeatedly bringing it to the floor for a vote when he knew he didn't have the votes for passage. So all the Republicans now have several votes on record against the neediest, most vulnerable of Americans. Not only that, but some conservatives had gone even further to rub salt in this wound by saying the unemployed don't want to work, and that UI extensions have made them "lazy."
Talk about tone deaf and stupid. Sheesh!!!!
Amen. Republican ideology trumping common sense is what took the GOP brand name off the shelves along with bad dog food in the last few elections. The GOP will just keep wondering why their policies create more Democrats.
Let’s not forget that VP Biden publicly promised the American people just weeks ago that we’d have a string of summer months with the economy generating 500,000 new jobs each month.
For June, it appears that Biden is 487,000 jobs short.
Your fears about a lame duck session are unfounded. The House may indeed pass bill after bill to create havoc, but this crap will die in the Senate. RAT Senators up in 2012 won’t go along - they will be terrified for their political survival. My recollection is that there are 22 Senate RATS up in 2012 and only 12 GOP senators.
It’s rotten, I hope it gets rammed through somehow tomorrow. If not, it’ll be 2 weeks until any news on UI. It’s a scary scary prospect for me and millions of others right now.

If I’m not mistaken, people have been able to draw unemployment benefits for 99 weeks, almost 2 YEARS.
Isn’t that long enough? If not then there are other sources of help. No one who runs out on their unemployment benefits is going to starve. Not in this country. Not yet anyway.
There are 3 main rules for the self-sufficient* (*virtually extinct now thanks to big gov):
1) If you don’t tend to your garden and livestock, you will not have anything to eat.
2) But first you have to prepare; buy land, plow your fields, put up fences and barns, THEN build your house.
3) If you don’t store a portion of your food during the good years (canning, drying, pickling, etc.), then you will have nothing to eat during the bad years.
These rules apply to everyone, throughout their lifetime, just not so literally.
I am suffering economically too, but being honest with myself, I can see how I brought some of my suffering on myself. I didn’t get an education or learn skills that would pretty much guarantee me work. I didn’t prepare my “fields” before my “house” either. The former especially, for me, was a HUGE mistake. (I didn’t really have time for the latter.)
I’m not heartless. I know things can happen that can’t always be prepared for. Sometimes we can do EVERYTHING right and still find ourselves in need. That’s what social programs are for. They are supposed to be a safety net for those who did everything they could but found themselves in need anyway. (By social programs, I do not mean unemployment benefits. I mean welfare. UI is not supposed to be a form of welfare.(!!))
I didn’t ask to be born with severe health problems that led to permanent disability at the age of 25, and I didn’t ask for that brain tumor either (or the other 2 lesions that are not growing so far).
So I understand that there will be some people who need more help than 99 weeks of unemployment insurance provides. That’s what social (welfare) programs are for. If 99 weeks isn’t enough then that’s the next alternative.
But for a large proportion of unemployed people who have reached their 99 weeks, I GUARANTEE you that they could have done things differently in their past to avoid their current situation. Better education. Practial skills. Saving money. Preparing their “fields” before buying their “house” (house = home = family). Wiser choices throughout life.
Who will tell me I’m wrong on this? (”You’re wrong!” isn’t very persuasive, so if you disagree, please elaborate.)
Here’s something to consider:
Cats are true carnivores, yet if you throw your cat a meaty bone, chances are it will have no clue what to do with it.
We have become modern day cats. We don’t even know how to chew anymore, a most basic function of life. We’ve become so accustomed to government “kibble” over the years that we would literally die if it wasn’t for the government feeding us. Sure, a cat might eat a mouse or bird now and then, but will it survive without kibble? Chances are, no. How sad is that?
(And yes, my pain meds are causing me to ramble, but hopefully I’m making some sense here.)
