One interesting piece of information came from the TV interview of a guy who survived jumping off the burning rig into the ocean. If I understand his statements correctly, he said that around the central pipe in the blowout preventer, there was sort of a 15 foot long rubber collar (a giant O ring?). Apparently a technician pulled up the pipe a ways and damaged the inside of this collar. The survivor said there had been pieces of it coming to the surface and some were concerned that it was much more than the usual internal wear would produce. [Will some oil person tell me if my understanding is correct.]
So my question is: Did Transocean inform BP of this issue, and if they did, did BP ignore the potential of this to cause problems? Seems an important part of the “who to blame and sue” issue. Of course, the question also is one of weather anyone survived who was in a position to answer this question.

However, I'll repeat what I said back in May: This event is going to be a "localized" ELE. So catastrophic that it's going to show up in the geologic record.

I listen to Coast to Coast every evening. Most of it is BS. This story is BS. Anyone older than 12 can tell when guests on CTC are lying.
Coast to coast is like an improv troupe playing a game where they pull keywords out of a hat and try to sell conspiracy theories based on them.
Last time I listened to it, they were going on and on about Obama’s Jones Act and its impact on the BP oil spill clean up. The Jones Act dates back to 1920.
It’s entertaining and I know that a lot of teleplay and screenplay writers like it for inspiration. But it’s certainly not close to the truth.

That o-ring thing to which you refer is an “annulas” or annular seal, an on-off device. It’s there as a pressure seal.
The straight poop (as straight as you’ll get, anyway)is that the drill pipe string was accidentally dropped 15 ft while the annulas was engaged, shearing off chunks of rubber and ruining the seal. It’s not there to act as a brake against 150,000lbs of drill string weight, as some have reported.
Once it was toast, things went badly soon thereafter.

Some are in OVER one mile of water - deeper than the one mile depth of this well.
Some of the wells feeding into these platforms are drilled into over 10,000 feet of earth, NOT including the mile + of water they are in.
This leaking well is not really any different geologically than any other well in the Gulf..... but I'm not a drilling expert.
There are some on the Oildrum.com forum who are refuting the “worst case scenario” that was posted there earlier, so it seems that a lot of speculation is mixed in with expert opinion as to where this thing is apt to go.

The relativistic view is always trumped by something known as common sense.
Those without common sense can educate themselves with statements such as those found in post #13.
Good thing you’re a conservative—it gives you much quicker access to common sense than if you were a leftist. This should answer your question.
I don’t know how much of the article is BS but as someone who has designed and fabricated pressure gages, valves and fitting for the the oil and gas industry, the statement of 100,000 psi is plausible. I often wondered where they’d get that much pressure naturally, since they routinely purchased gages, fittings and valves rated to 180,000 psi. Above 180,000 psi is difficult because we could never test them, I don’t know of any fluids that don’t turn to solids above 180,000 psi. What I do know is that the alloys for these high pressure fittings are really expensive; sometimes costing over a hundred dollars a pound just for the metal; and the fittings and valve are big enough to need a good hoist to even lift them.
As for polluting Europe and the entire earth, that’s pure BS, normal earth seismic activity releases these quantities routinely.
What about the previous huge Gulf spill down in Mexico. That was done by PEMEX. IE - A government entity.
I quit reading when he said the only way to stop it is a nuke.
