I thought you may enjoy this “Congratulations to the Sunderlands on their new baby boy! The family has decided to name the baby Paul, after the captain of the Ile de la Reunion, the fishing vessel that rescued Abby from the Indian Ocean.”

Good thing there are no predators or white slavers on her route.

France is currently reasonably safe, with Roman Polanski under house arrest in Switzerland

They also don't realize that the girl isn't going to get to try it again, because now she isn't young enough. The only reason that she was sent out early was to gain the record, now she is just someone who wants to sail around the world and no one is going to sponsor that.

I'm not sure she ever wanted to sail around the world for its own sake, rather it was the record of being the youngest to have sailed around the world.
Departing August 2010 could have brought her home April 2011 at 17 years 6 months and youngest evah!
When they learnt about Jessica Watson in July 2009. They went cuckoo-bananas.

In contrast (courtesy of Wayback machine January 2009 Ryan Langley

Welcome to the home page of the Southern Ocean Solo sailing challenge! I am Ryan Langley, a 16 year sailor old currently preparing for a nonstop sailing voyage around the world! A voyage like this has never been attempted by someone my age before.
He originally planned to depart in 2008, shortly after turning 16. The plan was rushed (but not as rushed as the Sunderlands'), but far better thought out than Team Sunderland - he actually had a boat, and the right boat. a blue water cruiser
It has been interesting to follow Michael Perham who is two stops into his proposed nonstop voyage around the world aboard his Open 50, Totallymoney.com. It was unfortunate for him to have to stop, which was due to problems with his Autopilot. An Open 50 is designed exclusively for speed over safety, and they are known to be difficult to sail, so it wouldn't be my first choice of vessel for the youngest record. - Ryan Langley December 2008

Comparison

Jessica was the only one who made it in time. When Ryan didn't make it he resheduled to October 2009 (which would still have brought him home younger than David Dicks)

But Jessica made that moot.

Because Ryan is a genuine sailor and prepared to adapt Global Challenge

In all of history, only five people have ever sailed solo, nonstop around the world from east to west via the Southern Ocean. In 2010, Ryan Langley will leave the Olympic Peninsula on a nonstop westabout sailing voyage around the globe. When he completes this voyage, Ryan will become the first American, and the youngest person ever to circumnavigate solo, nonstop against the prevailing winds and currents.
I expect him to make it. He has something that Team Sunderland lacks.

From your post 197; Abby’s parents are great. That can’t be disputed. Yes. It can.

A proper reading of the sentence you find objectionable still identifies it as opinion. A statement that that something "can't be disputed" while a strong statement is still a statement of opinion.

The necessary reply is then to refute the statement by saying how the statement of opinion is incorrect and can be denied. Mischaracterization of the original statement is not a logical response.

I realize it is common to use the approach you have to deflect attention from the statement or to take a pass on replying to it but that does not logically advance the discussion.

Oh please. Words MEAN things. That can’t be disputed. isn't a suggestion. It tries define YOUR opinion as fact.

Encarta definition of dispute

question something; to question or doubt the truth or validity of something

So your statement was That can’t be questioned. You presented your opinion as fact.

And we are now done.

And we are now done.

You have still avoid the question. And now using another tactic to avoid answering, you declare victory and run.

It's OK to say you just don't have an answer. Much better that way that to so transparently avoid the question.

Went over your posts newbie. Didn't see a question mark in any of them.

Now you can have the last word and declare victory. Whatever "victory" means. I'm simply tired of reading your posts.

Well. It's been quite a while since you attempted to dicuss the issues. And I'm more sure you understand what they are

But It's not even about Abby

Posted 26 October 2004 - 07:31 AM

I'm totally ticked off.

She found a sponsor who gave her the benefit of the doubt and coughed up money for her "dream". Then she was irresponsible with the money and trust of the sponsor by not preparing properly for a major trip. Sure they have their liability of giving money to a "nobody" but why stomp on the company who gives unknowns a chance to do something special? Now how likely will the sponsor be to cough up for the next person who may actually be better prepared and achieve the goal?

Her ill-preparedness and lack of good judgement caused her to puss out on a trip that quite a few of us west coasters do each year cruising, shitty weather and all. She failed, she chickened out, and she has less character than I had hoped from her. Shame on her for not doing the work necessary to take on such a project then blaming others for her lack of mental and physical readiness. She claimed several thousand miles of experience, on what? Did she go discount class on a Princess Cruise?

To which I agree. Venture Sunderland was the most ill-advised sailing venture in, well, 5 years.

The lesson is: you don't go to sea without proper preparation.

It cheats those who back you. And allows the nanny staters excuse to impose extra-territorial limitations os behavior.

On month ago, any such attempt could be countered in the court of public opinion with "your rules would have restricted Jessica Watson"

Now the nannies can appeal to the teeming millions, who believe the Government can keep people safe, with "No more Abby Sunderlands"

Already Laura Dekker, who completed all previous requirements the Courts had imposed, is finding them now sayimg "well, we're still not sure about letting you go". And I don't think you can absolve Abby for contributing to that.

A valid point. I take that as you agree with my comments regarding the nannystaters but with your adding that Abby's voyage works against my position.

Now it Begins

Four girls touch the world, two in death and two in life

Why No Legal Action Against Solo Boat Girl's Parents for Child Endangerment, Ask Columnists Robert Weiner and Noah Merksamer

It takes a village. And the thing is the Sunderland position is built on sand and PR. Abby was not the bold competent adventurer they promoted: she was a victim pushed out in search of her 15 minutes.

Any attempt to defend her will collapse badly
