Breaking: Lakehurst military base on lockdown (Ft Dix/McGuire AFB, NJ)

The Lakehurst section of Joint Base McGuire-Dix- Lakehurst is on lockdown this morning, base officials said.

The lockdown went into effect at about 9:15 a.m., Senior Airman David Carbajal said. The lockdown means no one is allowed to leave or enter the military base.

Local police have cars and barricades blocking off Route 571 west of of Route 70.

The lockdown was briefly applied to the Dix and McGuire sections of the 40,000-acre base, but is now in effect only at Lakehurst, Carbajal said shortly before 11 a.m.

The New Jersey State Police has sent resources to assist with the incident, said State Police Detective Brian Polite.

No further information was immediately available.

2007 Fort Dix attack plot

A group of six radical Islamist[1] men, allegedly plotting to stage an attack on the Fort Dix military base in New Jersey, United States, were arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on May 7, 2007. They were subsequently charged with planning an attack against U.S. soldiers. The alleged aim of the six men was said to be to "kill as many soldiers as possible".[2] Their trial began on October 20, 2008. [3]

Opening arguments were presented on October 20, 2008.
Assistant U.S. Attorney William Fitzpatrick said the defendants were inspired by jihad saying "Their motive was to defend Islam. Their inspiration was Al Qaeda and Osama bin Laden.

It appears to be over, but no idea yet if the suspect was a disgruntled employee, a despondent boyfriend and/or a man with Mohammad somewhere in his name.

Officials have lifted a lockdown that lasted a little more than two hours at a Naval air base in Lakehurst on Monday morning.

The lockdown went into effect about 9:15 a.m. on the 42,000 acre Naval Air Systems Command base (NAVAIR) at the Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, however it's still unclear as to what put base officials on alert.

No one was allowed to leave or enter the base during the lockdown. The Dix and McGuire portions of the base were not affected.

The base is a tri-service military installation, combining Fort Dix, the McGuire Air Force Base, and the NAVAIR base, formerly known as the Naval Air Engineering Station Lakehurst.

The NAVAIR Lakehurst base is the same site where the Hindenburg crashed in 1937. It currently employs about 3,500 people worldwide and is located about 75 miles south of New York City.

Since no one wants to be accused of profiling, or put on the spot to call it terrorism. The E-4 can credibly say that he does not have an answer to the media's questions.

If the PAOs are deployed, and the remaining ones are at the Command Post responding to the incident,
an E-4 may be all that's left over to meet the media at the base Welcome Center to give a statement.

When I was in the Army, all the work was done by he E-4s

Lower ranks were too new to the Army so didn't know what to do.

E5s thought they were Sergeants, so they were “in charge”.

I was in public affairs as an enlisted Marine in the early 70s. This was not uncommon, nor was it out of the ordinary during the rest of my career in the Air Force. The next most common PA spokesmen are lieutenants.
