...Actually if you look at the picture of the chair it looks like there is a spacing of 4” and only two of the bullets hit their intended mark.

The holes in the chair are from the bullets exiting the body after traveling several inches through bone and flesh. Also, the shooters were not shooting from the same angle. This pattern would be expected in that case. I’m just going by what the eyewitness said.

“Detailed accounts of the deaths of these people are unhelpful. We do not have such accounts of the deaths of the killers’ victims. Stories like this only provoke misplaced sympathy for the killers and, over the long haul, may undermine public support for judicial executions.”

Agree.

The victims suffering is usually only detailed in a gory, sensational attempt to sell books or movies.

I wonder how much and how long this reporter ruminated over the pain Gardner’s victims felt.

Frankly, I wished they had spread out the timing of the shots some. Like a minute or so between rounds.

Somewhere, I read that the blank round was specially formulated to give the same recoil as real lead. I don’t think it would be a true blank, but possibly loaded with something like gelatin to mimic the feel of lead.

The “blank” round isn’t a traditional blank. It’s an “ineffective round”. Still has the kick. They know what they’re doing

"Ineffective" round? Can you explain exactly what that is? I've been around firearms and shooting for over 40 years and I've never heard of that term. That doesn't mean it isn't true.I've just never heard that term. I am the first to admit that there are things I am unaware of. If this is true, I'd like to learn about it. My motto has always been that if I don't learn something new each day, it was a waste of time getting out of bed.

Meh, there are whole companies that come in and clean up after things like that.

Never heard the term before. Interesting. I still don't think it would recoil like a live round, I've shot wax bullets.

It's that old "equal and opposite reaction" thing, based on the amount of force required to moved the projectile. The heavier the projectile, the greater the force required to propel it out of the barrel, hence the 'greater equal and opposite reaction', e.g. "kick".

"Even though he murdered, we should exact the punishment humanely and quickly."

I could not possibly disagree more. Seriously. He deserved to die a slow, horrible, drawn-out painful death. As should all murderers.

Fortunately, he will suffer eternally in Hell. I just wish his trip there were a little more memorable to him.

Now, as far as those saying these were "lousy" shots...what are you?....Olympic shooters?

Actually, I'm an experienced marksman myself. And if you read my follow-on posts, I was advised that the shots were fired at different angles, actually hit the circle, and then exited at converse angles. No big deal.

I truly hope he repented before he died, and from some accounts I’ve read, he seems to have done so. If he did, then he will enter heaven, just as any repentant sinner does.

In any case, this whole episode is a tragedy. For the victim, for his family, and for the murderer and his family, too. It is a further tragedy to take any joy in his execution, however necessary or justified it may be.

In 1988 a close family friend, who was like a sister to me, was carjacked and murdered. Ten years later her murderer was executed. I can tell you, the “closure” that families want and expect to experience when the murderer is executed does not come. Or if it comes, it is very transitory.

The only peace that comes is from forgiveness and a willingness to unite the suffering you continue to experience with the suffering of Christ, who was also murdered, and offer it for the redemption of all sinners, including the murderer.

Not exactly. The purpose of the blank round is to make it easier for the shooter to pull the trigger. If he’s got any last minute qualms about taking a human life, he can hope that he’s got the blank.

(Yes, I know we’re talking about the death of a convicted killer. Conscience is the difference between a murderer and an executioner.)

The focal point is the chest, facing the target the shooter to the far right will have his bullet pass through the target and continute tothe far left side and vice versa for the shooter on the left as his bullet will exit the far raight side. All bullets will have their focal point on the taget.

may undermine public support for judicial executions

Why? Because people might actually understand what happens at these things and decide that it is not appropriate?

We are deer hunters here in Michigan. I have seen a deer run 100 yards after a heart shot. You are right.

(click on the pic to blow it up full size)

OK, so here is what the shot pattern would have looked like if all the shots were perfect -- assuming that the wall was, in fact, 18 inches behind the chair...and it doesn't look like it's that far at all. (and assuming there was no deflection from hitting a bone)

Personally, to me, it looks about six inches behind the chair.

What is a the distinction? Did a projectile leave the gun or not?

Detailed accounts of the deaths of these people are unhelpful. We do not have such accounts of the deaths of the killers' victims. Stories like this only provoke misplaced sympathy for the killers and, over the long haul, may undermine public support for judicial executions.

If you can't squarely face what happens when a government ends the life of one of its citizens on behalf of its other citizens, then what's the point?

Back in the old days, hangings were done in public before throngs of onlookers, not in secret chambers behind locked doors.

As I see it, if you can't execute someone honestly and openly in the interests of justice, then maybe you shouldn't be executing people.

I'm still looking for a good explanation. Doesn't it still come down to simple physics? A "gelatin" round would not have the same mass as a lead projectile, thus not the same recoil. True?
