Putin: Western Model of Democracy Doesn't Exist
The Woodward Report ^ | June 14, 2010

Vladimir Putin gave a traditional interview to French journalists prior to his visit to Paris. In the interview, the chairman of the Russian government said that the Western model of democracy does not exist per se. Below you can read several most intersecting excerpts from Putin’s interview.

About democracy

“Can you tell me what it is – the Western model of democracy? France has one model of democracy, the USA has another one. A French politician told me once: one can not do anything at the elections in the USA without money – whether they are elections to the Senate or Congress, not to mention the presidential election. There is nothing to do there without a sack of money. So what is that democracy about? Is it democracy of those who have a lot of money? The USA is a presidential republic, Great Britain is a monarchy. All of that are elements of democracy, but what kind of democracy? There is no single model of “ Western democracy ”. It doesn’t exist.

“Tony Blair is a good friend of mine. His party won the elections under his leadership. Afterwards , Laborites decided that he should step down . Mr. Brown immediately took his position and automatically became the prime minister, without elections. What is it ? Democracy ? Yes , it is . That is the way it is – good or bad.

Russia Today: Solution on Iranian nuke program should fit all sides - Putin

“I’ve had many discussions with American colleagues. I asked them how could it happen that the majority of US citizens voted for one person, but another one took office as president owing to the system of electoral delegates. The Americans answered: you do not need to interfere...

Russian rigged elections are better ... hey pootie.

BTW, America is not a democracy, they fail and turn into tyranny in short order. Oh sorry, that’s what you want.

Many Americans on the left would agree with Putin and would prefer a dictator as long as they can chose the dictator while they are among the elites excepted from the purges.

Of course, history as shown continually that the so called elitists are often the first eliminated.

Actual quote: There is no single model of “ Western democracy ”. It doesn’t exist.

Link-getting headline: Putin: Western Model of Democracy Doesn't Exist

Why do we jeer MSNBC when they twist a quote, and cheer when "our guys" do it?

(And....he's absolutely correct! There is no single model!)

“I’ve had many discussions with American colleagues. I asked them how could it happen that the majority of US citizens voted for one person, but another one took office as president owing to the system of electoral delegates.”

Shut up Vlad. First, ‘democracy’ as defined by ‘majority rule’ is not what America is about. There are elements of that in our system, but ultimately America is about the protection of individual rights and the preservation of individual self determination.

There is no better system on Earth that protects the rights of the individual than the system put together by our founders. Unfortunately, that system has been corrupted.

The electoral college is in place because the founders had the wisdom to recognize that areas of concentrated populations could have very different interests than more rural areas, and thus there had to be some manner of ensuring a voice for those not part of the great population centers. Why should a farmer in central Illinois have his leaders chosen exclusively by people in Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles?

In any society there are those who are hard working individualists, those who create products, services, and jobs, those who delay personal gratification to learn a skill etc.; and, there are those who do not contribute.

To ensure that people had a voice in creating the circumstances that would allow them to become productive contributors, and in keeping with the statement in the Declaration of Independence that we are all endowed by our creator with the unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, we do not restrict voting to those who are the ‘producers’ in society. This carries a risk that we have to take. That risk is that those who are not producing will eventually become a greater percentage of the populace than those who are. At that point they can vote themselves, by simple majority ‘democratic’ means, whatever they want to extract from the producers. That leads down the road to the same disaster that your USSR became. Our system has safeguards to prevent that, but they have been slowly dismantled by those who think like your previous colleagues in the USSR.

He didn't even get to use the 10k for his campaign. He had to pay that as a fee to get in.

True, true, true.

I started to point out that very same thing, as well as the idea that we are suppose to be a republic.

But then I considered the quote I did comment on, because too many problems over the last 200 years have had the words “a French politician” associated with them...

Democracy does not come in models. What I took Putin to mean is he would have his own model of democracy, like Chavez does. Democracy is not durable, and has a very short time to turn to tyranny.

Tyranny comes in models, degrees of lies.

I guess Putin’s model of democracy is one where when someone voices objections to his stooge Medeyev, he sends goons out to smash their faces if not murder them.

Democracy does not come in models.

Most certainly does. Direct democracy. Parliamentary democracy. Democratic republic. Democratic socialism. Unlimited variants.

What we have here now is a federal kleptocracy.
