As I said, I think that all of the interference in healthcare will create a massive backlash. We’ll see...

"Yes, but what does that have to do with private employers firing people who smoke, are generally unhealthy or may live a lifestyle or orientation that the owners of the company find to be unacceptable?"

One can use the same argument for gays. I can name other groups if you like, but I suspect you aren't really open to dialogue.

The other is that whether anybody likes it or not, conservatives ought to recognize the owner has the right to do this.

I agree in theory but not in practice. If there's ANY regulation that requires him to hire or fire ANYONE, and there is, then the libs can't whine if we object to this. I would prefer no regulation in EITHER case, but picking and choosing which groups gets protection from workplace discrimination isn't acceptable.

I am just a bit confused as to why so many conservatives believe that a private company should not be able to fire an employee because he is fat, smokes or is gay.

How about hunters? That 'lifestyle' can prove a problem if one is careless and gets shot, requiring a hospital stay.
The diabetic comment in the article really surprised me. Hopefully, Weyco has an employee handbook that states the conditions and terms of employment. It sounds as though Weyco kept the employee on and then after the fact fired him/her.

Personally, I don't give a crap how the owner of the company runs his business. In fact, I'd like to see Weyco's policy touted far and wide. Good luck hiring employees when people know you could be let go at the whim of some new health concern. Personally, the owner of the place sounds like a real d***head.

I agree-what ever happened to the freedom to live as we choose?

You are free to choose whether or not to work for his company.

The problem here is the fallacy of expecting employers to pay for health care. Health care has nothing to do with employment. If I were to write a healthcare bill, it would discourage or prevent employers from providing health care insurance. It would at least abolish the discriminatory practice of “groups”. It is a personal responsibility, not a government or a a big-brother corporate responsibility.

Isn’t this the jerk that fired people for smoking while OFF the clock?

Yeah a total control freak.. and I also think he is somehow trying to push the limits to see what people will tolerate.

I don’t care if I was making 20,000,000 a year, I would walk right out of a job like that. No job is worth my freedom.

And you are right.. this is EXACTLY where National Health care is going to lead us all.

Any employee shown the door could have a case for intentional infliction of emotional distress. It’s easy to pick the jury, too — just take fat people.

I am 100% in agreement with you.
This system of Healthcare coverage contingent with employment- expected with employment - has the employer and employee stuck in this paternalistic-bureaucratic spiral.

Is this the future of obammacare?

Basically, yes.

This guy cites costs as a reason for pushing employees to be healthy. After all, unhealthy employees cost him in terms of medical insurance prices. And really, why should he spend more money on one person than another, unless that person is producing more for his company?

This is exactly what we can expect from Obamacare, now that the taxpayers (whom they didn't care about when they passed this mess) are footing the bill, the government will act as an agent for them and will want to "encourage" healthy lifestyles. And healthy age groups. They now have a financial interest in our health, and see us all as a cost.

This guy is (perhaps inadvertently) doing us all a favor by illustrating the direction in which we're headed. It would be very interesting if he fires someone, and they sue. Any court decision will potentially have an effect on the government's ability to dictate healthy activity to the masses.

I see nothing wrong with this. It’s free enterprise, it’s his company, if he doesn’t want fat slobs chain smoking and eating KFC for lunch good for him, it directly effects his costs when paying for benefits.

On the flip side where does it stop, will Kroger and other grocery stores cell buyer information, ie, this guy buys two boxes of twinkies a week and a case of PBR every other day and a carton of smokes?

What to do ... ? / wringing his hands

A society controlled by lawyer tyrants insists on Christ like perfection or money damages for the margin.

If you don’t meet the Christ like perfect health model, you are liable for the additional costs of health insurance.

The only remedy is exterminate the tyrants
