Minor point here, but those parents did not put the boy up in the balloon. They just allowed it to be believed. However, everything you said up to that point was equally off the mark. If your opinions are FReeperness, woe is us.
I believe the family knew the risks. Abby’s brother Zac sailed alone around the world when he was 16 in a boat that he bought with his own savings and outfitted. The father runs a boat building business. Whether their confidence was misplaced can always be questioned, but not by me.
I never- and would never - claim to speak for all Freepers. My opinions are my own, and I am a Freeper. There is no Borg mind here. My opinions are as valid as anyone elses. You do not have to agree with them- but I notice you do not choose to debate them.
RE: no.. she should get a couple of partners and:
1. Hike along the Iranian border
2. interview North Koreans on the Chinese border
3. wander around the Pakistan country-side.
4. head towards guatemla,cuba,columbia,vietnam
Let’s add some more possibilities ...
5. Join the peace flotilla to Israel ( one quick way of having a boat named after you — see Rachel Corrie ).
6. Join the “freedom fighters” in Latin America ( see Lori Berenson ).

A Note from Abby
Hey everyone,
Sorry I haven’t written in so long as you probably already know I had a pretty rough couple of days. I can’t write much now as I am typing on a french key pad as well as trying to stay seated in a bouncy fishing boat.
The long and the short of it is, well, one long wave, and one short mast (short meaning two inch stub.) I’ll write a more detailed blog later, just wanted to let every one know I am safe and sound on a great big fishing boat headed I am not exactly sure where.
Crazy is the word that really describes everything that has happened best.
Within a few minutes of being on board the fishing boat, I was already getting calls from the press. I don’t know how they got the number but it seems everybody is eager to pounce on my story now that something bad has happened.
There are plenty of things people can think of to blame for my situation; my age, the time of year and many more. The truth is, I was in a storm and you don’t sail through the Indian Ocean without getting in at least one storm. It wasn’t the time of year it was just a Southern Ocean storm. Storms are part of the deal when you set out to sail around the world.
As for age, since when does age create gigantic waves and storms?
I keep hitting the wrong keys and am still trying to get over the fact that I will never see my Wild Eyes again. So Ill write more later.
Abby
Yes but the brother and the Australian young woman sailed durring better weather patterns in the Indian Ocean. Abby set sail at the worst possible time of year.
Coddling children to the point where they are never exposed to risk or allowed to push the envelopes of their abilities will do exactly that.
Oprah's America consists of a bunch of fat, lazy, whiney, helpless immature losers sitting around in their parent's basement waiting for Obama to "give" them a job, or at least a welfare check.
I can understand why this young woman makes so many of the spectator-types and raisin-testes on this site uncomfortable.
No they aren't. This was 2,000nm out. That's a 5,000nm mission. Normal rescue aircaft don't have the range. The only aircaft available for the first flight was a chartered QANTAS Airbus330. For the second they were able to find a Bombardier GlobalExpress long range corporate jet.
I think they've blown the budget (lucky it's June, otherwise ships at sea would be requested to avoid emergencies for 2010-11)
Adrienne Calahan agrees with you. "You don't sail in the Southern Ocean in the winter" http://www.latitude38.com/lectronic/lectronicday.lasso?date=2010-06-11&dayid=438
Thank you. I rest my case. LOL
I agree. People seem to have lost sight of individuality and adventure and instead want to put a price tag on everything. The payment for the rescue will be worked out, one way or another.
I've been appalled at some of the comments I've seen on here. One poster even said it might have been good if she'd died because then it would teach other kids not to try something like that.
That post made my blood run cold.
What has happened to the American spirit?
If you have a sextet along, you ain't going solo....
These days sailors use iPods
Hear, hear! I agree! Better than being stuck in the back of some McLaborCamp where they are barely allowed to run the french fry machine!
I wonder how many of the adults here, even given the gear and the craft could do as much as she has--sail even halfway around the world solo.
While I am sure there are a few, there aren't many.
"Fix that da&& mast!"
"...need to figure out who's a&& to kick."
My guess would be that the wait for this President would be forever. He's about as useful as breasts on a bull.
I find the reasoning of people so screwed up these days. If someone gave this kid a cigarette, I bet her parents and half the people here would be ready to hang them from the highest tree but yet its brave and cool to send this kid to almost certain death on the high seas all by herself. And the media! They call 20 and 30 yr old soldiers kids and call this kid a woman!
