AMSA Coordinating Search and Rescue - Wild Eyes
12 June 2010 - 11:30pm Update
Following the successful rescue of Abby Sunderland by the fishing vessel Ile De La Reunion earlier this evening, arrangements to land Ms Sunderland have been negotiated.
The Ile De La Reunion will proceed to the Kerguelen Islands (a journey of approximately two days), where Ms Sunderland will be transferred to the French Fisheries Patrol Vessel, Osiris.
It is anticipated the Osiris will return to its home port at La Reunion. The distance from Kerguelen Islands to La Reunion is approximately 1800 nautical miles.
“”WOW! What a novel idea. How did I survive 65 years?
You just have all the ideas and answers. Maybe you can move to DC.””
You have a few more years to reach my age and become as smart! There’s still hope for you.

A Note from Abby
Hey everyone,
Sorry I haven’t written in so long as you probably already know I had a pretty rough couple of days. I can’t write much now as I am typing on a french key pad as well as trying to stay seated in a bouncy fishing boat.
The long and the short of it is, well, one long wave, and one short mast (short meaning two inch stub.) I’ll write a more detailed blog later, just wanted to let every one know I am safe and sound on a great big fishing boat headed I am not exactly sure where.
Crazy is the word that really describes everything that has happened best.
Within a few minutes of being on board the fishing boat, I was already getting calls from the press. I don’t know how they got the number but it seems everybody is eager to pounce on my story now that something bad has happened.
There are plenty of things people can think of to blame for my situation; my age, the time of year and many more. The truth is, I was in a storm and you don’t sail through the Indian Ocean without getting in at least one storm. It wasn’t the time of year it was just a Southern Ocean storm. Storms are part of the deal when you set out to sail around the world.
As for age, since when does age create gigantic waves and storms?
I keep hitting the wrong keys and am still trying to get over the fact that I will never see my Wild Eyes again. So Ill write more later.
Abby
It doesn't but experience tells you to avoid gigantic waves and storms if one wiehes to remain safe, and the longer you live (usually) the more experience you get.
;-)
YES, but not for YOU. . . .
They should take her parents and dump them where she was.
Very nice sarcasm, however these people do cost millions when they go out on these stunts of theirs. Of course you and others , dont mind paying, so how about we send you a bill for your portion. You can pay mine too since I say dont allow any more 16 years olds to go out on missions like this where other adults with much more experience have died trying.
That’s what I’m thinking. Big bro, Mom and Dad have something else to worry about now.
Interesting link. Thanks!
If this was just about ‘adventure’, or ‘living her dream’, she could have waited a month, a year...whatever. But she couldn’t afford the trip on her own, and sponsors don’t pitch in big cash for someone just ‘living her dream’ - so she went when it wasn’t safe (OK, there is NO time that is safe for such a feat, but shades of danger), and her parents actively supported her doing so.
Bad, bad idea.
I want to encourage my kids to take chances. Thought out chances, with the risks and rewards weighed and accepted or rejected as unacceptable.
This wasn’t a noble attempt. It was a fraud, using a gimmick to sucker others to pay for a risky stunt so she wouldn’t have to do it on the cheap, or with her own money.
Circus, not life.
“It doesn’t but experience tells you to avoid gigantic waves and storms if one wishes to remain safe, and the longer you live (usually) the more experience you get.”
Outstanding response. Pity Abby will never read it, or be told to ignore such advice.
Thanks so much for this post from Abby’s blog.
I wish her well on her next try.
THANK YOU! Alive and well with a great story to tell.
The arrogance and contempt shown by these people for the greatest force on the face of the earth (as well as the ridiculously tender years of the sailor) suggests to me that they may ALL lack the necessary recognition to be credited with courage. That these glory hounds have done something to spectacularly historically demented is sadly not the most troubling aspect of the matter. THAT is reserved for our PC culture which has become so grotesquely distorted that EVEN AMONG SUCH GIGANTIC CONSERVATIVES AS YOURSELF it can only be seen that one of the high holy protected has done something and so it MUST be talked about in adoring superlatives and held up as an unapproachable example of courage and spirit and anything less is evidence of mental, emotional or spiritual defect (welcome to the old Soviet Union).
Actually for me it is difficult to be too critical of the girl-for her age. 16, under the best circumstances, is just too light in experience and far from seasoning for criticism to have much of a point. But there hasn't lived a seaman who served at the height of sailing ships who would have doubted that such a person alone on such a trip at just such a time of the year would have wound up dis masted and adrift at the very least. (I could point out that dis masted needn't necessarily be the end of the trip. I could point out that dismasting is always a possibility and might be planned for. I could wonder why no repair or jury-rigging to get her going again but, in the Name of the Savior(!) this is a 16 year old girl goaded into something far outside her abilities. If it were a man anyone could talk about the thing freely as ideas occurred to them without NECESSARILY being on the attack.
As for your sense of conservative superiority; As long as 2 plus 2 equals four for me I'll feel assured that I am a proper conservative. YOUR opinion in the matter is just so much noise.
Finally. Someone who get it.
Thanks for the ping, Cardhu.
I was worried about her. Thank God she is safe.
Have a great weekend.
good to “see you” sir! thanks for ping
Okay, let's implement your idea. Every time a child gets lost, no matter the reason, bill the parents.
Every time a cat or a dog get lost let's bill the owners.
Every time there's a fire bill the owner of the property - even if it's a lightning strike.
Your premise is based on selfishness and a lack of human compassion.
Hell, let everyone pay for everything out of their own pocket and if they can't they die or stay lost.
