Sheriff injured in West Memphis shooting says 'All hell broke loose'

Crittenden County Sheriff Dick Busby didn't even have a gun Thursday when the suspects in the slaying of two West Memphis police officers jumped out of their minivan and began spraying bullets at him and his deputy chief.

"They got out shooting with what they had," Busby said Saturday from his home in Marion, hours after his release from the Regional Medical Center at Memphis.

"We got back in the car," Busby said. "Then all hell broke loose."

The ensuing gunbattle in the Walmart parking lot with Jerry R. Kane, 45, of Forest, Ohio, and his 16-year-old son, Joe Kane, left the two suspects dead, while Busby was shot in the shoulder and Deputy Chief W.A. Wren was hit three times in the abdomen.

Wounded and hunkered down in their unmarked sheriff's car, the two lawmen continued to receive fire until a state wildlife officer rammed the suspects' van.

Earlier there was a thread pulled that appears to have been misleading. After finding numerous accounts of this tragedy from various sources... there appears very little to suggest that this was a Randy Weaver type of situation. May the brave officers who perished in this senseless mayhem rest in peace.

I don’t know why the Sheriff wasn’t carrying his gun. It is not always like the old West. A Sheriff’s tend to be more administrators than gun fighters these days. Look this stuff up for yourself and make your own judgement.

My own house was raided by the King County SWAT team by mistake about ten years ago. I never received a credible explanation as to what happened.

I do work with the police on an almost daily basis however and greatly respect the vast majority of officers that I know. I also work with the public and have met a few people whose paranoid fantasies cause them to become very unpredictable.

No mention of when the suspects got back in their minivan? I saw the news video of the cops pulling their bodies out of it.
