Obama to Suspend Arctic Drilling
The New York Times ^ | May 27, 2010 | Anahad O'Connor

Posted on 05/27/2010 3:04:48 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

President Obama will announce on Thursday a suspension of all applications for offshore oil drilling in the Arctic through the remainder of the year, an Alaska senator said late Wednesday.

The decision essentially extends an informal moratorium that Mr. Obama had set shortly after the BP accident on April 20 that led to the spewing of millions of barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. The new restrictions would suspend new offshore drilling permits in the Gulf of Mexico and off the North Slope Alaska until the cause of the accident is determined and stricter safety and environmental safeguards are imposed.

One major oil company, Shell Oil, had been hoping to begin a controversial exploratory drilling project this summer in the Arctic Ocean, which the new restrictions would put on hold.

Senator Mark Begich, Democrat of Alaska and a staunch supporter of drilling in the Arctic, said he was informed of the new restrictions by the Interior Department. Sen. Begich said he was frustrated because the decision “will cause more delays and higher costs for domestic oil and gas production to meet the nation’s energy needs.”

“The Gulf of Mexico tragedy has highlighted the need for much stronger oversight and accountability of oil companies working offshore, but Shell has updated its plans at the administration’s request and made significant investments to address the concerns raised by the Gulf spill,” Senator Begich said in a statement. “They make an effective case that we can safely explore for oil and gas this summer in the Arctic.”(continued)

Sorry if I gave the impression I thought you were dumping on the oil industry! I was just amplifying on your comment. Gosh I hate it when I do that.

I consider it one of the absolute miracles of the modern world that we can get so much fuel from so many places transported, processed, transported again and available just about anywhere in our great country. The amount of fuel we have to have available every single day throughout a huge nation is mind-boggling, at least to me. And it's been that way my entire life, save for a short time during WWII, and again in the 70’s for a bit.

And the safety record of those who perform that daily miracle is unmatched in the world. Sure, there have been some horrific accidents, but they are the exception, not the rule. Just the single act of delivering 8,000 gallons of highly flammable plain old regular unleaded gas from a storage depot to a eight or ten little service stations spread over a hundred or more square miles of rural roads is a miracle. And it happens every day, in hundreds of places all across the country.

BTW, I have no connection whatsoever to the oil industry. I'm just a long-time admirer of some of the things we Americans manage to pull of day after day, year after year, decade after decade. And usually under attack from a lib or environutty group.

Consider the complexity of a modern jet engine. Thousands of pounds of pieces, some moving at 15,000 rpm, and yet there are hundreds and hundreds of them humming along all over the skies of America, and the world. And not just one per plane, but two or more. Thousands of hours every day, operating at peak efficiency, and yet you seldom hear of one malfunctioning, other than when they suck in a bird or are deprived of fuel. And catastrophic failure of one is even rarer.

This is the kind of American Exceptionalism that Team Zero is so dismissive of!

And look at our prehospital emergency care system. There's hardly a place in America where a sick or injured person is less than an hour or so from a Level One trauma center. Sure, it's expensive. But just getting it done is a miracle in itself.

Sorry to go on and on like this, but I find it really fascinating how much we take for granted in our daily lives!

What every oil company and coal company in the United States should do is to destroy their equipment, pay off their help, tell them they won’t be needing them any longer, and close their doors. Let the environmentalist over here go back to living in the stone age or pay a thoundsand dollars for a gallon of gas or a hundred dollars for a pound of coal. Let the parasites living ogg the working tax payer living in the big city housing projects go without air conditioning for the summer and heat for the winter.
Let them see how good they had it because of oil and coal.

I wonder what The King would do if one of those foreign (e.g. China) drillers had the same sort of accident (if it was an accident) that befell BP, and their oil was washing up on our shores?Would he play golf, throw a party for the Hollywood glitterati, or go on vacation?

Perhaps lay a wreath at Mao's grave?

Exactly. Are the U.S. oil companies going to allow obama to nationalize the industry? That's what I'm wondering.

An excuse to advance his Marxist agenda. We need a conservative president and enough conservatives in congress to authorize drilling on U.S. soil. Any accidents on land are easily contained, and it would be much cheaper to drill.

The whole world is in flux. Rome fell, Eygpt fell, the Muslim dynasty fell, Chinese dynasties fell....

England fell to the United States back in the late 1700’s...

Europe has changed throughout the 20th Century...

If anything, history teaches us everything changes from climate to countries.

Trouble is coming and the reality is there is very little we can do to stop it. Freemen will not tolerate to live under tyranny. We do not know how quickly or how slowly life is going change, but change is coming.

I completely agree with you. The question becomes, will we accept our loss of liberty and our death in slow-boil fashion, or will free men rise up in courage? I do not know the answer to this and yet either alternative will be uniquely bad.

I'm still not convinced that Obama and Bill Ayers aren't CIA stooges/plants.

Go back to the townhouse explosion that wiped out a group of radical who were going to attack GI's.

Notice Ayers wasn't there?

Whatever formulas they were using were certainly not the safest*.

And consider Ayers' father was on the Board of General Dynamics?

Entrusted to develop the latest .mil weapons?

The absence of information on Obama's background?

Folks have this misconception the CIA is a bunch of super-patriots, when in reality they're just gub'er'mint workers putting in their time.

And frankly, about 90% of their work involves economic trends and reporting to...?

.

.

I know any net discussion of 'bombs' - 'formulas' triggers a ECHELON Flash ... so relax fellows, it just old [13David2] making a comment ;^)

I think Americans are uniquely quite patient. We are very slow to anger. It has taken the ‘progressive left’ decades to get to this point...and yet we wait patiently for them to see the error of their ways, we wait for elections.

Americans are incredible in the regard. The men of courage will not react unless a substantial violence is put upon them and even then the response will be tempered.

The question is, “Is our patience our vice or virtue?”

I liken us to the enabler in an abusive or addictive situation. So to me this high-minded patience is our vice.

Obama and his merry band of brainiacs are suspending drilling that has a blowout rate of .03% (three one-hundreds of one percent), but for the past 1 1/2 years, they have initiated a series of policies they claim are for economic recovery from a severe recession, policies that have a known failure rate of 100%.

Yep, real brainiacs.

I agree with you. In fact, I’d love to see a national strike. The left may have taken over our Government, our school systems AND our media, but when push comes to shove they rely on US for EVERYTHING since the people on the right are the only ones doing anything productive in this country (yes, I do really think leftists are all useless parasites... and if they’re not, they vote for Democrats who want to destroy our country so they’re even WORSE than useless parasites).

So we stop EVERYTHING. We stop working. We stop trucking. We stop filling shelves. We stop filling gas stations. Then we watch ‘em cry as we remind those boneheads in Washington that some part of their job description (besides destroying the country, taking bribes, and bedding whatever sex happens to be nearest at the moment) is to pay SOME attention to the will of the people.

Sigh. Just wishful thinking.

I ‘am seriously beginning to wonder if it was an accident now. We have had a Federal plan in effect since the 1990’s just in case something like this ever happens. obama choose not to use the plan and allow the oil to do as much damage as possible. He has now not only blocked future oil drilling in the gulf, but is closing down drilling in Alaska. I have serious doubts about the loyalty of obama to our country. It is now easy to see why our founding fathers required full and complete allegiance of the president at birth( both parents U.S. citizens Article 2). Of course under the Constitution obama is not the LEGAL president and has no right to be making these decisions.

I support an off-shore drilling ban.

In return we need virtually unrestricted drilling on land and a green light for nuke plants.

However, I believe any thinking person can look at the horrible damage done to the Gulf...within the context of sh!t happens...and realize the risks outweigh the benefits of off-shore drilling.

It's not just cleaning up the beaches...clam and shrimp beds are destroyed for probably decades, million of fish and birds dead. That ecosystem took a major blow.

Perhaps we really are a different people now. Who knows?

I believe as a nation, on the whole, we are a different people. There are many reasons for that, from our public education system to several generations never needing to serve in the military.

Approximately 50% of the nation are a different people. A minority is a domestic enemy. Harsh words for people who should be my fellow Americans, but what are we to make of those who work to undo the Constitution.

This is going to take more than one or two elections to fix. This is going to take a concerted concentrated effort to restore our liberty. It is going to take an effort to create opportunity, productive real opportunity.

The oil spill while it is catastrophic, is an opportunity for the brilliance of America to rise above it. As I type this BP appears to have succeeded in the first steps to cap the well. Not the government responders...BP.

Costner is seeking to implement his cyclonic water separators/cleaners. Again, not the government.

What is the EPA trying to do, the government trying to do? Stop the use of oil dispersant chemicals.
