AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas Gov. Rick Perry's showdown on the jogging trail has spurred a gun maker to sell a "Coyote Special" edition of the weapon he used to take down the varmint.

Perry shot the coyote that he said was threatening his daughter's puppy with a Ruger .380-caliber pistol. Manufacturer Sturm, Ruger & Co. Inc. has now come out with a version emblazoned with "Coyote Special" and "A True Texan" on the sides.

Nice to see Perry stimulating the Texas economy without spending a dime of taxpayer money.

“Our governor can outshoot your governor. That’s what I like to tell people from out of state,” said salesman George Gibbons.

He obviously hasn’t met Sarah Palin yet.

Perry's security detail was not required to file a report about the governor discharging a weapon, said Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Tela Mange. "People shoot coyotes all the time, snakes all the time," Mange said.

No one but an AP writer would make a statement like that. Real Dumb.

I like the concept, but I’d be a little concerned about the quality of fit. Look at the gap between the slide and frame in the 3’rd (last) photo. But for the price ($379) I guess one can’t be too picky.

My Governor, Jim Doyle of WI, would have probably scurried up the nearest tree and called 911.

Comparing Governors - California Vs. Texas
The Governor of California and the Governor of Texas are both jogging along a marked trail in their home states, accompanied by a pet dog. A coyote jumps out and attacks the dog. Here is what follows:

California:
#1. Governor starts to intervene and then realizes he should stop; the coyote is only doing what is natural.
#2. Calls animal control. Animal control captures coyote and spends $200 testing it for diseases and $500 relocating it.
#3. Calls veterinarian, who collects dead dog and bills $200 to test it for diseases.
#4. Governor goes to hospital and runs up a bill for $3500 to get bite wound cleaned and bandaged, as well as being tested for possible diseases from the coyote.
#5. Jogging trail is shut down for 6 months while State Department of Wildlife Services conducts a $100,000 survey to make sure the area is clear of dangerous animals.
#6. Governor allots $50,000 to start a state-run coyote-awareness program for people who live in the area.
#7. State legislature spends $2 million on a study to investigate how to better handle rabies and make recommendations to eradicate animal-borne diseases.
#8. Governor’s security agent is fired for not stopping the attack and for allowing the Governor to try at first to intervene.
#9. State spends $75,000 required to train a new security agent for the Governor.
#10. California State Employees Union files a lawsuit demanding re-hiring of prior security agent.
#11. PETA files lawsuit to protest forced relocation of the coyote.

Texas:
#1. Governor expends one .380 ACP Gold Dot Hollow Point, previously acquired for $1.23 at his own personal expense.
#2. Governor and dog happily keep on jogging.

Does anyone wonder why California is broke?

No self-respecting Texan outside of Austin would carry a .380 except maybe a girl who hasn’t reached puberty yet.....

Yes I have. For polymers, I prefer the Springfield XD or S&W M&P.

That was my initial reaction, but then I said to myself "wait a minute, the man was out jogging. He needed something small and very lightweight." I give him props for carrying at all in that situation. I'm sure it was his standard concealed carry piece... hold on, what am I saying!? He's the governor of Texas for crying out loud!! :-D

I live in the country. My “snake charmer” is a 45 Long Colt derringer with a #4 shot .410 round. I also fire 44 SPL in it (cheaper than 45 LC and not so much of a rasslin’ match). Before CHL law it was my anti-carjacking gun (no ballistics). I like Rick well enough but he shoulda paid off the press to say a little girl shot it if it was a .380.

Check the gap at the back of the slide above the slide release tab on your XD, then.

But for the price ($379) I guess one can’t be too picky.

Friend of mine just bought a used Smith Model 36 for $200 - that would be my preference...

;>)
