Students in large U.S. cities are struggling to improve their reading ability, especially at middle-school levels, according to results from a national reading test released Thursday.

Only Atlanta and Los Angeles, two of the 11 urban centers that took the reading exam, showed growth in eighth-grade reading from 2007 and 2009. They also were the only two to show growth since 2002.

Four districts notched gains at the fourth-grade level since 2007, while five showed progress since 2002.

The test scores are part of the urban National Assessment of Educational Progress, or NAEP. Known as the "nation's report card," the exam has been given in urban districts biennially.

Things have been going really well since the LA school district indroduced the Mi Pequeño Libro Rojo series of beginning readers.

“Parenting and culture. There is nowhere else to point.”

...I’d add one more thing Abe...in Baltimore for example, african american Democrats legally seized power at the ballot box over 3 decades ago...since then the schools have declined.

Urban schools?

Seems to me that the problems like this always seem to arise in liberal areas.

african american Democrats legally seized power at the ballot box over 3 decades ago...since then the schools have declined.

After their cultural behaviors drive out everyone else, it's a fait accompli that they eventually win elections. And it's back to parenting and culture as the root.

Pie has been deemed unhealthy by the Office of the First Lady of the United States. You may visit your local 0bama Stash "food oasis" for your complimentary ration of dandelions and gruel.

Jim Carter gave a lobby group a Cabinet seat back in the ‘70s. They were ‘sposed to fix all the ills of our schools. They’re called the NEA, or something like that. Seeing as how they’ve failed after billions of dollars spent on ‘em one has to wonder: why are they still occupying the seat?? Even Reagan couldn’t oust them.

And yet the people that inner city voters ten to elect are adamantly opposed to school vouchers.

If the dumb masses are taught to read, then they might be able to access the world’s great thinkers. Then they might actually start discerning between philosophies and thinking for themselves instead of accepting the pablum offered by the lamestream media. Then they might not vote Democrat. So all of this bodes well for the libs.
