Russian navy ‘sent Somali pirates to their death’
First Post ^

An international maritime treaty means suspected pirates can be tried in the home countries of their victims – but some governments have been put off this course of action for fear that convicted pirates might not return to Somalia after serving out their time in jail. Kuznetzov seemed to echo this when he said: "Why should we feed some pirates?"

Russian media reported that the 10 men were set adrift in a boat with no navigational equipment, and that contact was lost with the boat's radio beacon within an hour. However, Commander John Harbour, a spokesman for the EU naval force in Somalia, told the BBC that the loss of navigation equipment would not necessarily be critical and that the signal from the beacon could vanish if the battery ran out or it entered a satellite blind spot.

One Somali news website reported a conversation with an unidentified pirate who claimed the men were indeed dead – but said they had all been shot before they were loaded into the skiff. There is no evidence for this account

Pirates will think twice when they see a Russian flag on a ship.

"Why should we feed some pirates?"

I don't have a problem with feeding pirates ... to the sharks.

Medvedev said “We have to deal with pirates like our forefathers did”

Man, even Adolph Hitler killed himself not to be captured by those forefathers....

If Russia authorizes the captian of a milatary ship to conduce an onboard trial and pass sentence under the authority of homeland Russia, it sounds legal to me.

This adds a little more danger into the pirate mix since they won’t know if they are grabbing a ship that will get them killed or not. a Russian Roulette sort of?

Even if it didn't before they loaded in the pirates, it probably "accidentally" acquired one before being set adrift.

While Somali pirates continue to attack other countries vessels they’ll be offering free bilge-cleaning services to Russian vessels from now on.

Sorta like how concealed carry protects unarmed people, too. Cool.

The pirates know well ahead of time what vessel they are targeting and what cargo is on board. They have moles in the insurance companies. Or you could just go to marinetraffic.com and thanks to AIS, see what ship is sailing where, all over the globe.

No evidence. . .and NO credibility given it's source.

Appropriate.

It hurt really bad.

Keelhauling also put some of the punished sailors out of their misery before they could be hauled back aboard.

Apparently, these pirates forgot about when the career counselor mentioned death as an occupational hazard for piracy.
