Moscow - The Somali embassy in Moscow on Tuesday confirmed the death of 10 pirates released at sea last week by Russian forces off the coast of the Horn of Africa country.

Earlier, an official from Russia's Defence Ministry told journalists that the men were presumed dead since their boat had not reached the shore.

Russian forces had captured the pirates last week in an operation to rescue the tanker Moskovsky Universitet, which was hijacked in the Gulf of Aden.

But the pirates were released on Friday and put in one of their own boats, without weapons or navigation equipment, 300 nautical miles off the coast of Somalia, after Russia said there were no international guidelines for prosecuting the men.

That is one way to make sure they don't bother anyone else.

It is obvious the Russian’s know how to make certain that these “pirates” never, ever, got the opportunity to hijack a sea-going vessel again.

Wow... those poor pirates. What it must have been like for them. I mean no navigation equipment, wow. Why would Russia do that to those poor souls? /s

Gee, I wonder if the rest of the world is paying attention?

Having been known to place a wager now and then, I would bet that if scenario was replayed a few more times, we might see a considerable decrease in the pirate activity, but then again, that's just me.

Hard to row 300 miles with no water.

It's particularly hard to row with your hands tied behind your back.

Weapons and navigation equipment were not what they vitally lacked.

What killed them (in a slow, painful, suffering death) was lack of WATER.

At sea, in the desert, and in other places where you are totally exposed to the sun, you will become massively dehydrated in a matter of hours.

Has anyone here ever been thirsty, and I mean suffering from thirst to the point where it is all you can think about?

If anyone ever watched that episode from "I Shouldn't Be Alive" about the sinking of the yacht Trashman, they saw a reenactment of what it is like to be in a small boat at sea and watch everyone die of thirst (and shark attack). Not fun.

One of the survivors wrote this book: it reads like a horror novel.

The pirates deserved their fate. The Russians don't care about being "condemned" by CNN, MSNBC, Al Sharpton, or the UN.

The pirates will think twice about attacking any Russian flagged ship. Believe me.

I don’t think the pirate under the razor wire made it back to the boat.
