MOSCOW – The pirates seized by a Russian warship off the coast of Somalia have been released because of "imperfections" in international law, the Defense Ministry said Friday, a claim that sparked skepticism — and even suspicion the pirates might have been killed.

Use better bullets—train shooters better. Simple. Sharks need food, also.

I’ve not always had good things to say about Russians; particularly during the Soviet era, but THIS is ONE aspect of the Russian psyche that I have always admired: their hard-nosed, no-nonsense manner in dealing with clear and present threats to them.

The Russian response to threats from terrorists and other such elements is, and most always has been, clinical, utilitarian, and final. The old Soviet empire, while it is legitimately castigated for its handling of those who expressed dissent over its policies, seemed most often to “get it right” on matters such as we have at hand.

So, then, I think the only unanswered question is, “How does a Somali say ‘Shark bait’?”

“Freed” in the technical sense.

Throw them overboard, and let them freely swim 500 miles home.

They could have been release over the side alive - 50 miles out.

Per news stories, pirates were released 300 miles from the shore in an inflatable raft (boat.) I don't know what currents exist there, but for those pirates it will be an unforgettable trip, even if they have food and water.

Also reports say that the reception of the radio beacon stopped after 1 hour after release. There is no reason for pirates to turn it off, the beacon is helping them. The line of sight distance (assuming a U/VHF beacon) is 18 miles (I had to guess antenna heights.) So one scenario is that the ship moved away from the boat at 18 mph. The ship's speed is up to 35 kt (40 mph,) but it's not alone, and the fully loaded tanker is probably pretty slow. Another scenario is that the inflatable raft sank for whatever reason.

"You're not going to take us to Russia, are you, Captain?"

"Of course not. You're my chum."

"Oh, thank Alla . . . uhhh..."

Wow, this didn’t take long. Seems like I had just read about the Russian ship being taken and people posting comments about here come the Speznez.

I saw one report that the Russians released them in an inflatable raft miles off the coast of Somalia. Catch and release has a different meaning for the Russians.

The ship was captured 300 miles south east of Socotra which would put it mid point between Somalia and southern India. - the engines were stopped and it drifted for a few days so I figure it would be about another 50 miles further south east when it was recaptured.

The engines were restarted and it continued on it way to China until the they received word to release them in a rubber boat with no food, water, navigational aids or means of propulsion.

They would be at least 800 miles east of Somalia. They will never be heard of again.

“They were executed and tossed overboard.”

Or told to walk the plank and swim back.
