Here are my tips. Think in terms of layers and the Rule of Three (one is none, two is one).

Layer 1: refill 2-liter soda bottles and juice bottles with tap water. Label bottle, rotate once a year.
Layer 2: buy cases of water bottles for lightweight, totable clean water
Layer 3: acquire large water storage containers, e.g. 55 gallon drums. Fill with water, treat with bleach.

Have more than one way to purify water.

Layer 1: unscented bleach — rotate once a year
Layer 2: a WAPI (cost: $8, requires the ability to heat water to 149 degrees)
Layer 3: water purification tables

Another layer (hi-tech), the SteriPEN, which uses UV light to purify water in less than two minutes.
