Republicans, Democrats, and Israel
Jewish World Review ^ | 4/30/'10 | Caroline Glick

Bipartisan support for Israel has been one of the greatest casualties of US President Barack Obama's assault on the Jewish state. Today, as Republican support for Israel reaches new heights, support for Israel has become a minority position among Democrats.

--SNIP--

AIPAC also has institutional reasons for papering over the erosion in Democratic support for Israel. First, most of its members are Democrats. Indeed, AIPAC's new President Lee Rosenberg was one of Obama's biggest fundraisers.

They need to wake up! It is obvious now that the support for Israel in the Democratic party was only for show. Too many of them bailed out at the earliest opportunity. If Jews want to preserve the relationship with the U.S. the relationship with the Republican party must grow stronger.

Nonsense. The Dems in Congress remain just as pro-Israel as ever. That is what counts.

Thank you for sharing your peerless wisdom on a column you have obviously not read.

While there is clearly a number of pro Israeli Democratic Congressmen/women, many are not. Nita Lowey mentioned by Caroline Glick is my Congresswomen however I would love to see her replaced by her Republican challenger Paul Wasserman. Not only is Paul equally pro Israel but he is campaigning on fiscal responsibility (ending the out of control government spending).

Having gone to the Pro Israel Anti Obama demonstration outside the Israel Consulate last Sunday (in the rain with thousand of other people), the need to remove Democratic control of Congress is beginning to take hold in the Jewish community.

First, I read the article. The author cites votes on resolutions and letters that really have little impact on Israel. In terms of real support, how do the Democrats vote on assistance bills for Israel? What is the role of politics on some of these Dem votes on Israel that are critical of the Administration?

There are 45 Jewish members of Congress--31 in the House and 14 in the Senate. Only one is a Rep Obama's chief of staff is Jewish (who served as a volunteer at an Israeli Army Base during the Gulf War) as well as his chief advisor, Axelrod, and head political operative now back in the WH working on Obama's reelection, David Plouffe.

Has Congress cut assistance for Israel?

"The Muslim Call to Prayer is one of the Prettiest Sounds on Earth" - said Barack Obama to the New York Times ---------------------- Allah is greater than any description
I testify that there is no deity except for Allah
I testify that Muhammad is a Messenger of Allah
Make haste towards the prayer
Make haste towards the worship
Prayer is better than sleep
Allah is the greatest!

I will believe it when I see it. After blacks, Jews are the Dems' second most loyal constituency. We need more Jewish Reps in Congress and less Dems. Good luck to Wasserman.

I’d love to see it to. We sill have to wait until November. There was this Ron Kessler piece Wed in Newsmax which has me pretty optimistic:

Wow. Since "foreign aid" (which keeps Israel a complacent American fiefdom) hasn't been cut, then I guess Obama and the Dems are fanatical Zionists.

You forgot to mention the USS Liberty and Simon of Trent.

You conveniently miss the point. Until the Dems in Congress take actions that really hurt Israel then I don't view the votes and signatures cited by the author to be conclusive or meaningful. I would like to see Democrat votes on assistance to Israel over the years to see if there is a smiliar trend to the one identified by the author.

I suspect that some of the Dems are resisting signing or voting for letters and resolutions that are critical, explicitly or implicitly, of the Obama administration. It is political. Where are the cries of the Dems about the war in Iraq or Afghanistan? The Patriot Act? The homeless?

The reality is that there is not a dime's worth of difference between the two parties when it comes to Israel. That is the reason why support of Israel is seldom mention in Presidential election campaigns except for each party trying to outdo the other in how much they support Israel. Just read the statements of the Presidential candidates when they address AIPAC.

Carolyn Glick is right on target about the major theme of this article, that Rebublicans as a group tend statistically to be significantly more pro-Israel than the Dems as a group, with regard to both elected officials and the grassroots of the respective parties, and that the Obama policies exacerbate the gap.

She concludes, however, with a dubious conclusion about the 'Rats:

By using support for Israel as a wedge issue in the upcoming elections, Republicans will do more than simply constrain Obama's ability to harm the Jewish state. They will be setting a course for a Democratic return to strategic sensibility in the years to come.

Unfortunately, "strategic sensibility" and today's Democratic Party hardly mesh on any issue. Ms. Glick is overly sanguine about the future of the 'Rat pack.

I agree. If anything, they will harden their bunkers. As much as they are anti-Israel, they are ALSO anti-American. Any small j jew who stays with them is either insane or just like them, in which case, they ALL need to be shunned. Just...gone as if they never were.
