It’s a question of what ought to be done.

Is it necessarily beneficial to the Republican party? No.

Is it necessarily beneficial to the US as a whole? No.

However, that decision was made over a hundred years ago to liberate Puerto Rico from Spain. So, like it or not, they are American citizens. The right thing to do is to give them a free and fair vote between independence or statehood.

I realise this isn’t a popular opinion, and from the content of the bill, the opinion is NOT shared by Obama, (who is trying to rig the vote). But I believe that Democracy wins everywhere it is tried.

What if they vote to be free? Would you not consider that to the benefit of the US as a whole?

Sorry. O.K. I’ll check it over.

But I have listened to Glenn Beck and generally agree with him on most things.

Obama is a Marxist Menace and worse.

We should let them decide once and for all between two choices: Independance or Statehood.

Right now they are stuck in “Dependance” mode.

If they want Independance, transition it out over something like 4 years and then we can wash our hands of the mess.

“Judged not by the colour of their skin, but the content of their character.

The Phillippines chose independence.
Cuba chose independence.

Puerto Rico should be given the same choice, independence or statehood. If they are willing to serve the USA and serve the Constitution, then the fact that they are hispanic is irrelevant.”

NAILED IT

They are members of a political class who can’t understand or explain the difference between illegal and legal immigration without being ambiguous. The hispanic dems know exactly what is at stake if this bill passes it will bring down fire from heaven on the heads of Democrats. The key to liberal advancement is not winning outright it is by steady erosion through constant trumped up complaints.

"...Why would 60 Rs sponsor such a bill?..."

I dunno. Why did G. H. W. Bush start out his Presidency with a similar initiative?

Guam is a territory; likely Virgin Islands as well.
I’m not certain what territorial status means, in terms of degree of independence. When I lived in Guam (1952-54) the governor was appointed by Pres. of U.S.

Note those Republicans that joined the majority of Democrats, in voting to force citizenship or independence upon Puerto Rico.

Remember those members of Congress who do not care for the self-determination of United States Citizens.

All the Dems see is two more Democrat U.S. Senators.

Trust me. Two more Dems in the Senate gives them 61 (Nelson insurance) and then they can press ahead with the rest of their agenda.

If they were a state, yes we’d have 2 more Dem senators. It would also be unfair if they continued to receive all of the economic stimulus that they have for years, with companies getting big tax incentives to build plants there. I think you would see corporations fleeing PR, increasing unemployment, and costs to the new state government.

The people in PR know when they have a good thing and aren’t likely to change it. They also have been known to use extreme tactics when they think they are being exploited.

[almost 60 Republicans are co-sponsors of the bill.] Huh? Why?

Republicans don't necessarily read bills either.

Its a waste of time. Just give ‘em two choices. Independence or Statehood. Shiite or get off the pot.

Its wrong to exploit other people, and if they want your assistance, they should be part of the system.

Colonies are un-American.

Yep, lets let in an impoverished, WIC-dependent, Third World Spanish-speaking nation as a state.
