I don’t necessarily disagree with anything you said (unless by YOU, you meant me - I’m not Puerto Rican, tho’ my wife is.)

I’m curious though - do you feel the same way about the residents of DC? Like Puerto Ricans, they are subject to the whims of the federal government but have no voice in that government. And even worse, they pay US income taxes...

Well, D.C. is another story due to its peculiar status.

But I do believe residents of D.C. should be allowed to vote in federal elections and for Senators, and representatives. But I believe they should be represented by Congressmen from Virginia or Maryland.

I don't think there should be two Senators and one Representative from what is essentially just a city. That would provide Washington D.C. with an unfavorable leverage with respect to New York, or Chicago or any other major U.S. city.

My personal opinion is that DC should be returned to Maryland. Solves the representation problem. They returned the Virginia portion of DC to Virginia, its time to return the rest to Maryland.

Uh..

You mean like Guam, The U.S. Virgin Islands, Northern Mariana Islands?

You know their residents are also U.S. citizens right?

Then you got American Somoa and others. Residents are not U.S. Citizens but U.S. Nationals.

The U.S. has a lot of possessions with different special statuses.

Puerto Rico has a far larger population than any of those other places which makes its status an issue of greater concern.

Perhaps the U.S. should offer those other places the same alternatives I suggested for Puerto Rico.

Why should ANYBODY enjoy essentially the same privileges we do without compensating responsibilities? Why would ANYONE want to compromise their right to participate in he national politics of the nation to which they belong?

Agreed. Puerto Ricans were drafted when the US military had a draft, but they were not allowed to vote. That doesn’t seem fair. Seems it’s time to go one way or the other.

Possibly in reaction to the number of other states passing 10th amendment resolutions? The groundwork is being laid for secession in some areas, that pressure might have some interesting effects on the back-room politics going on.

If you believe that there is ANY chance that PR would send Republicans, let me remind you: Hillary Clinton won nearly the TOTALITY of PR votes in 200, AFTER her traitor “husband” pardoned PR terrorists! These people rewarded this act of disgrace! Republicans don’t have to worry about having their throats slit by an enemy. Just scream “RACIST”, and they will take knives and slit their own throats!!1 Bob

It’s not OUR choice, Ellen. The whole vote is a Marxist scam. After hearing Glenn Beck, it’s unfathomable that any Republican would vote for this. Please read up. Cordially, Bob

Ugh!

DC is territory ceded by the states of Virginia and Maryland.

Puerto Rico is the same as the Phillippines, Cuba and Guam, as a former possession of Spain.

Got it.

Territory ceded by a state vs. territory ceded by a nation.

The issue is the constitutionality of the status.

Great Britain is a commonwealth because each of the constitutent parts are governed by the Queen.

Is America the same? No. America is not a Commonwealth like the British Commonwealth.

This is one issue that the TRUE American Right (who don’t want to absorb a Third World nation of 4 million into our Republic) and the Far Left can agree on. Anybody who care about preserving our culture, our civilization, and our identity as a First World nation must oppose PR statehood.

There are many stupid people in Congress, on both sides of the aisle. Of course there are many more stupid Rats than GOP, but it seems the margin is narrowing.

almost 60 Republicans are co-sponsors of the bill.

All of whom should be slapped aside the head for wanting to bring in an impoverished, Third World, Spanish-speaking people by shoving statehood down their throat. Anyone who says they want to restrict illegal and legal immigration and are opposed to DC Statehood should, if they had any logic in their mental faculties, oppose PR statehood. It was bad enough that the pale-faced saps gave citizenship to PR back in 1917, now they want to bring us further to the left by bringing in PR as a state. I wish this weren't the case, but nonwhite, poor people dependent on government employment/services DO NOT make good Republican voters. The GOP is once again shooting themselves in the foot so as not to appear "racist."

“nonwhite, poor people dependent on government employment/services DO NOT make good Republican voters. The GOP is once again shooting themselves in the foot so as not to appear “racist.”

Judged not by the colour of their skin, but the content of their character.

The Phillippines chose independence.
Cuba chose independence.

Puerto Rico should be given the same choice, independence or statehood. If they are willing to serve the USA and serve the Constitution, then the fact that they are hispanic is irrelevant.

I wish I could share your sentiments, but, historically, this demographic (who are not merely "hispanic" but mulatto, despite what the PR census tells you) and who are poor by mainland standards with an economy dependent on federal largesse do NOT make GOP voters.

If a vote DOES occur, let it be on PR only, and let them have the choice of Commonwealth, statehood, and independence. The Pay-Nay-Pays and their enablers in DC should at the very least accept this, and not shove statehood down our throats, or that of the people of PR.
