MADRID (Reuters) - The Spanish navy captured eight suspected pirates off the coast of Somalia on Sunday as part of Europe's anti-piracy mission in the area, the Defense Ministry said.

The Spanish frigate Victoria captured a whaleboat and various skiffs, on which the ministry said arms and other materials suitable for use in pirate attacks were discovered.

Under instructions from Europe's anti-piracy "Operation Atalanta," the Spanish navy destroyed the whaler and took its eight crew on a skiff toward the Somali coast, the ministry said in a statement.

Didn’t the Spanish used to hang pirates when they were caught?

Previously, on 'Pirates in the Indian Ocean':

"On 29 March 2009, as [Spanish frigate Victoria (F82)] was taking part in Operation Atalanta, German Navy Tanker Spessart (A1442) was attacked by a 7-man pirate boat [1][2]. In addition to the regular 40-man civilian crew, Spessart carried a 12-man security detail which exchanged small arm fire with the pirates, and repelled the assault [3]. The SH-60 helicopter aboard Victoria intercepted the fleeing pirate skiff, opened fire and kept guard over the surrendering pirates until relieved by naval units. The frigates HNLMS De Zeven Provinciën, HS Psara and the USS Boxer were involved in this chase."

The only reason pirates were hanged at sea was because the sailing ship that took them couldn’t bring them back to shore for trial quickly. When they were landed on shore, civil judges tried them and ordered them hanged.

So, basically their pirating consists of ransoming? Is it only people they hold captive? No mention of saving any hostages, what are they stealing otherwise?

Just wondering what the modern day pirate is pirating?

“...and other materials suitable for use in pirate attacks were discovered...”

Eye patches, peg legs, striped shirts, hooks and a large chest full of capital “R”’s?

It doesn’t say what they did with them after they headed to the coast in a skiff. I’m guessing they’re back on pirate duty by now.
