I didn’t say that I agreed with anything here. I just threw out the topic for discussion because I think that it’s interesting since the author is black and (presumably) a Democrat in DC, although I don’t know that for sure.

I’m rather neutral on the whole subject of prayer in public school because I am Catholic. However, my kids went to school in TX at a time when a Protestant prayer was broadcast over the school announcement system every morning during home room and it didn’t hurt them. Taught them to respect other religions.

I thought that the author made some good points here.

Back in my day (although we did not have prayer in school in CA) some schools and colleges taught courses in Bible as Literature, or even in Comparative Religions. It is valuable for students of all religions to be familiar with the Bible because so much of Western Literature, Art, and Music draws upon the Bible. Even geography and politics is in the Bible. I think that that is what Mr. Kane found comforting. He already knew the words that the lady at the funeral was saying.

I remember that in one of my classrooms back in elementary (public) school that there was a series of pictures posted on the wall. On each picture there was a quotation representing a particula religion. I’ve forgotten the quote — could have been one of the 10 Commandments, or it could have been the Golden Rule. But, there was a comparable quotation from each of the Jewish, the Christian, the Buddhist religions that was similar in meaning. Those pictures remained on my 6th grade classroom wall all year. I’ve forgotten the quote, and I’ve forgotten the religions represented beyond what I have stated here. But, I do remember the lesson — that we are all alike more than we are different.

Christianity is the foundation of Western Civilization. Islam is the enemy of Western Civilization. Christianity should be taught and Islam should be prohibited from our public schools.

Right... great idea.

And in the name of diversity, the prayer to be uttered in school will start with either be Islamic or Wiccan, your choice.

I don’t want children praying to Allah or the Earth Goddess in schools, but it seems this author is all for it.

This should be obvious and maybe it is. Maybe the opponents of school prayer just don’t want common decency in society and the populace to look for other sources of strength than government.

I am in agreement with you.

Schools do a lousy job teaching math, science, reading and writing; what makes people think that they would do a better job teaching morality and religion?

Then we have the point where the ox meets the gore. Whose religion and whose morality. Should they teach the Book of Mormon in Utah? The Quran in Detroit?

Lord’s prayer? Why’d you want to put that kind of pagan idoltry into schools?

Everyone moral and just says the Shahada (There is no god but God, and Muhammad is the Messenger of God)...

If only people would just allow prayer in schools, their’d be a just and morale society!

(after all, prayer is prayer, you know)

Face it, you just want to force your religion onto the young and impressionable. Allah likes that idea. That... and the sword allowed Islam to spread so far, so fast.

That was SOOO last presidential cycle. Don't you know that there's been a *CHANGE*? It's now...

Yes, of course... for there is no place but schools where common decency is taught. Go ahead and absolve the parents for their poor upbringing of their children. It's not their fault, for the schools are where morality is learned.

Don’t put words into my mouth. I did NOT suggest praying in school in the words of different religions. I DID suggest learning about different religions — not proseletyzing. I also suggested learning about the influence the Bible has had as literature and art on our culture.

Where did this author suggest that?

The author wrote an article about the benefits of prayer in schools. Then gave an example of his experience with Christian prayers.

Why would anyone assume, in this day and age, that if the gates were opened to prayer again, we’d get Christian prayers?

Considering the political landscape, Islamic or Wiccan prayers are far more likely to occur. I don’t want to see that happen. So we should not allow the door to be opened.

for the schools are where morality is learned.

To a large degree, obviously. Only a fool would think that have a child for six hours a day, 190 days a year for 12 years would have no affect on his moral outlook.

The sad thing is that there are fools out there that would deny this.
