You couldn't pay me enough to live in California...the whackjobs....taxes...regulations....brushfires....mudslides...crime...and earthquakes?

No thank you!

With the number of aftershocks in the 3.0 range, is there any possibility this is an earthquake swarm like those preceding a volcanic eruption?

Yep it sure is...we have 160 acres just north of Bishop on highway 6 (Benton Crossing)...so drive 395 regularly from LA area...that area is gorgeous...

Snowing in Bishop this morning (yes, April 5th).

Have you looked at the map of those aftershocks? There’s a gazillion little Mexican aftershocks all heading north! They’re all trying to cross the border!!

If it weren’t for the big one that started this, I would say that to my untrained eye, it looks like the beginning of a volcano!

Close the border to undocumented aftershocks now!

Since the 7.2 earthquake in Baja about seventeen hours ago, there have been 190 aftershocks. That does not count the other quakes in the Southern California region, specifically just over the border in the United States. It refers only to quakes tagged as Baja.

Southern California experiences earthquakes daily, most of them too small for people to sit up and take notice. Some of those over the last 17 seem to have been related to the major Baja quake. They have increased in strength from the 3.0 range to upwards of 5.0.

Everyone knows this isn’t unusual, the aftershocks. That swarm of 190 Baja quakes does seem elevated to me, but then I wouldn’t be surprised if even that is typical for major quakes. It’s just that I’ve got a new tool that allows me to track them better.

I think the Landers Quake....a 7.3 ...had thousands over several years.

Kind of a side note...but these big quakes have impacts for years,

Static-stress impact of the 1992 Landers earthquake sequence on nucleation and slip at the site of the 1999 M=7.1 Hector Mine earthquake, southern California

That’s what it sounds like to me, but which volcano?

I don’t know of one close enough to qualify - but then, this is a hobby for me.

We need a wall that’s 20’ high and 20 miles deep!

Nope. This is a completely normal number of aftershocks for a quake of this size.

I have been watching the incredible number of after shocks and noticed that some are at 0.0 depth — could this be an indication that there is some magma involvement moving upward — could it be volcanic lava flow?

no volcanos, just parts of the earth’s crust moving past each other. the main quake loosened things up, ground’s gonna shift around a little until it settles down again.

Do you or anyone know anything about the Chinese scientist who is using clouds to predict (at about 68% success rate) locations and occurrence and even timing within a window of time) of earthquakes?)

Have been reading about this today - at these links - though have not had time to read them all in full:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earthquake_cloud - about Earthquake predicting clouds – from antiquity!

http://pinewooddesign.co.uk/2008/05/12/earthquake-cloud-prediction/

http://www.terraresearch.net/articles/earthquakeclouds_article1_file.htmlLong Long linear clouds (called “snake” clouds) all of a sudden appearing in a clear blue sky – indicating an upcoming quake – back in the 1800’s first described).

http://www.earthquakesignals.com/zhonghao296/A991218.htmlNo no pictures - article about Chinese scientist – same as above.

http://www.gisdevelopment.net/proceedings/tehran/p_session2/bampf.htm Best article yet.

Several of the cloud formations pictured in this article I have seen over Cary in the last six weeks.

Please see post 779.

Any comments or sightings of unusual clouds over the area near where the big quake hit or the small quakes are hitting?

(of course it’s difficult to see the clouds right now - though this scientist in China believes you can predict earthquakes by looking at satellite maps of the clouds - and thinks these should be posted every 30 minutes for the entire world!)

Any insight would be appreciated. I would really like to find a way to connect with someone who understands and appreciates this scientist’s research.
