Sweden tops IT economy ranking (USA places 5th)

Sweden has the world's most hooked-up economy, according to a new report from the World Economic Ranking (WEF).

Nordic countries all performed well on the list in the WEF Global Information Technology report released on Thursday.

Sweden displaced Denmark to rank first on the chart, with the Danes sliding to third place. Other Nordic countries were also in the top 10, with Finland in sixth place and Norway in tenth.

Singapore crept closer to the top, moving up from fourth place last year to second place now.

Fellow Asian economy Hong Kong was in eighth place, also gaining from 12th place a year ago.

The so-called Networked Readiness Index looks at how prepared countries are in using information communications technologies by measuring the general environment for the technologies, the readiness of individuals to use them as well as their actual usage.

Investments in technology, R&D, Capitalism and education sure pays off.

This is the only way to go and people who believe health care reforms, Socialism or tax cuts alone could do the trick are severely mistaken.

No one ought to be surprised that Sweden of today is a considerably more healthy economy that it was in the dark, Socialist past.

According to FDI Magazine/Financial Times, Stockholm is the 4th best European city for foreign direct investments after London, Paris and Moscow. Furthermore, it is estimated that Greater Stockholm will grow from today's 2 million inhabitants to nearly 4 million in the coming twenty years - and this is hardly because of the breeding accomplished by Muslim immigrants (see link to a former post of mine on this subject below). In other words, even if Stockholm will continue to be a small city compared to LA, Tokyo and London, Stockholm might soon surpass Berlin and Rome in population size (as these cities aren't growing much or are even shrinking in terms of population size).

Which company will exercise the most of influence over our common digital future, Microsoft, Intel, IBM or Ericsson?

That I do not know, but I do know this technology presently is being developed here in Sweden rather than in Silicon Valley, even if Silicon Valley still is of great importance in the domain of IT.

The main reason is that probably no other company on Earth can compete with Ericsson when it comes to making IT-/ICT more minute as well as more mobile. I'm not an expert of these things, but I know a little about economic history and the history of technology and it's apparent to me that IT has developed in this direction ever since its childhood. Since the 1980s, Ericsson has been central to this process.

Today, computers are not stationary to the degree they were twenty years ago. In the future, computers will probably be even more mobile.

I'm not claiming Stockholm houses more HQs of IT multinationals than Silicon Valley does, but I wish to draw attention among Americans interested in economy and technology to the fact that American and Northern European companies presently are up to immensely interesting activities here in Scandinavian. Heard of 4G?

Google might be an even bigger corporation than Swedish Ericsson, but few companies can compete with Ericsson in bringing about ICT revolutions. The fact that I have access to Google through my cellphone has more to do with Ericsson's technological solutions than those of Google.

Contrary to Norway and Quatar, Sweden has no oil but still is one of the ten wealthiest nations on Earth measured by nominal GDP per capita. During 1994-2007, in other words after the global economic crises of the early 1990’s but before the recent, global financial crises, Swedish GDP growth was almost twice as high as that of Germany.

Apart from issues concerning IT and resistance to Muslim ideas on freedom of speech, Scandinavia and especially Sweden deserves recognition for its ability to produce successful internationals.

Two of the richest men on Earth are Swedes and there's a reason why.

Sweden is one of the most PC countries on Earth and the climate is nothing to write home about (if you're foreign..), but the economy is among the healthiest on this planet. Even though Sweden pays for its own defense.

Apart from this, Sweden has in fact beaten Canada in the game of ice hockey as well as that of curling.

Malmo, across the bridge from Copenhagen, Denmark, was slated to host Davis Cup tennis matches a few years ago, and had to cancel because the presence of the Israeli team was causing their large Muslim population to riot.

Oh,please! This kind of comparison is so stupid as to beggar the imagination. It is really easy to wire up a country the size of a postage stamp. It is just a bit different to do so in a land area the size of the United States.

- True, but this was also a matter of leftist stupidity among local politicians in Malmö.

For various reasons, Socialists often make common cause with Islmofascists.

In some ways, Malmö is even more extreme than (other) parts of the Muslim World.

I recall hearing a member of the Israel team pointing out that prior to the game that was to be played in Malmö, Israel had been playing in Muslim countries without anyone calling for those matches to be canceled.

Exactly.

Sweden's population is almost the same as Michigan - about 10 million.

- Yes, Sweden is small, but isn’t this pretty much of a disadvantage when trying to raise national technological levels?

Sweden has small resources in terms of population size and domestic market size compared to the largest European countries, Japan and America, but my country is evidently using them in a very wise manner.

If size is disvantageous in building wealth, howcome large countries like Germany, USA and Japan have been successful in this game and so many small nations have not?

Sweden is home to 9 million inhabitants but still has 40 577 patents registred at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Compare that number to the average European country or the average American state.

USA is definitely a very, very impressive nation from a technological point of view, but in relation to population size, few nations beat Sweden.

For instance, take sub technology:

I know the women there are very good looking. If I was 24 and single today, Sweden might be a place to move to besides New Zealand.

- Swedish women are indeed beautiful, even if this clip clearly illustrates that we remain inferior to the Brits:

No. It has more to do with level of education. Thanks to MANY things invented by the US, it is now possible for small nations to do things previously impossible.

And Israel kicks Sweden's ass in the category of innovation. If they weren't in a constant war for survival, they would undoubtedly be at the top (and no, I'm NOT Jewish).

“Thanks to MANY things invented by the US, it is now possible for small nations to do things previously impossible”

- Yes, but thanks to MANY things invented by Swedish companies and/or Swedish persons, large nations like USA, Germany and Japan today performs better than they did in the past.

Something I find interesting about the Swedish economy is how “differentiated” and diversified it is.

Even if you reside in say France, Australia, California or whatever, you could actually live a 100% Swedish life; drive a Swedish made car (Volvo/SAAB/Koenigsegg), live in a Swedish prefab house (for instance, check out http://www.aladomo.com/) and surround yourself with IKEA furniture and Swedish hi-tech like that of Ericsson or why not Aqeri (http://www.propac.se/?id=144) and so on.

Yes, Israel too is a very competent, yet small country with a strong defense. But do they have tank drivers of this caliber? (the vehicle is called CV 90, not to be confused with the Volvo XC 90):

I’ll take the Swedish girls anyday ! :) LOL

A parallel to the UK, when I was in New Zealand three years ago, I saw a decent looking girl but I also saw her mother and the mther put quite a bit of weigh on. If the daughter follows her footsteps, she will look the same in a few years.

- Sharing files is great fun, but let’s have a look at things from a broader perspective.

“Unfortunately”, the Anarchist scum of Europe will never rule Swedish streets as long as there are Swedish cops.

- On the other hand, many 70 year old British women are about as appealing as their 20 year old granddaughters.

I won’t deny that young women often are very difficult to control, but once you learn the basics there’s really not much of a problem:

What fundamental new technologies has Sweden invented?? Aircraft? Spacecraft? Microelectronics? Nuclear power?? Thin-film solar cells?? Sorry, but Sweden has NOT been a powerhouse of development. For some very FEW things they have made some significant improvements, but real world-impact technologies.....no.

Take your "Sweden uber alles" crap somewhere else. Like all Swedes I've ever met you have the same unjustified superiority complex.
