Contractors Kill Somali Pirate, Prompting Fears of Rise in Violence
Wall Street Journal ^ | 24 Mar 2010 | Associated Press

Private security guards shot and killed a Somali pirate during an attack on a merchant ship off the coast of East Africa in what is believed to be the first such killing by armed contractors, the EU Naval Force spokesman said Wednesday.

The death comes amid fears that increasingly aggressive pirates and the growing use of armed private-security contractors aboard vessels could fuel increased violence on the high seas. The handling of the case may have legal implications beyond the individuals involved in Tuesday's shooting.

The Associated Press writers are totally divorced from the concept of self-defense, or threats and kidnapping, and from any concept of practicality in dealing with violent criminals. Defense is regarded as the problem.

What will really cause violence is if defenders are blamed and prosecuted. Then there is no choice when attacked but to kill all the attackers, and abandon their bodies at sea, without reporting anything. It is weakness which encourages violence. Adequate strength deters violence.

Every ship that sails through those waters should have firepower to blow these thugs out of the water.

Prompting Fears of Rise in Violence

Wow. So now defending yourself is just considered goading the pirates into more violence? Have they tried pouring gasoline on their socks....so the ants don't crawl up and get their candy ass?

the handling of the "case"

Like all news reports out of the MSM, self-defense is considered a crime, and those who defend themselves should be in prison.

Liberals are evil.

You know the Leftist crAP is on the Muslim marine terrorists’ side. They’ll never write a story like that about the terrorists but only the those who defender themselves from terrorism.

If I were to bet on it, I’d say the defenders will be blamed and prosecuted.

“are the writers insane, or just pro-pirate?

This is like the mainstream media headlines that often read “Crime down despite rise in prison population”. You can tell that the liberals whom write these stories and headlines are genuinely befuddled with the situation.

A contractor doing his job. A dead pirate. Once again, proof that the free market solution works...

This is a non-sequitur.

Killing violent criminals results in fewer violent criminals and less violence.

Kill one pirate, one less pirate. Kill ten pirates, ten less pirates. Kill all the pirates, no more pirates. Seems simple to me.

As a bonus, if you kill all the pirates there will be little recruitment. If the result of your career choice is sudden death, you might reconsider your choices. Even a prospective pirate can understand that.

Screw the AP and their ilk!

These contractors should be commended and their contracts should have performance bonuses written in for the number of pirates and pirate ships/boats killed or sunk. Also the lesser the quantity of ammo used to do the job the bigger the bonus too.

It’s their presupposition that is the problem. Their presupposition is that ... “all violence is bad, an increase in violence is bad”

Not all violence is bad. How it is applied can be quite good. I think the AP is run by a bunch of women with masters in education.

It is good to see shippers take self defense more seriously. Only by killing the pirates will they be able to do their jobs.

Now watch for some do-gooder liberal to have the victims brought up on criminal charges.

What will really cause violence is if defenders are blamed and prosecuted. Then there is no choice when attacked but to kill all the attackers, and abandon their bodies at sea, without reporting anything.

Not a bad idea!

Who prosecutes the ship’s defenders, when the incident happens on the high seas?? Maybe Obama can find a use for Gitmo, after all. He could capture them and send them there.
