Knoxville's census office is facing a shortage of applicants despite part-time jobs that pay almost $13 an hour. More than 2,000 positions in a three-county area are available between now and the end of summer. Even with 22 full-time recruiters in Knox, Blount and Sevier counties, applications have been few and far between, said Marty Coffman, manager of the Knoxville census office.

"For whatever reason, people have not been signing up. It's just been slow," Coffman said. "I need people."

Applicants must be 18 years old and pass a background check. They must also take a basic skills test.

I think I spotted what might be a reason....

That’s cause demoRAT welfare recipients would rather sit & do nothing, and still collect their “gubmint” money, rather than getting up off their fat asses & doing something to earn money. They’ve been conditioned to be fat, lazy & unproductive through decades of milking the welfare money cow.

You know what they’ll do? They will lower the standards. Hey, get those guys out of jail, I’ve got a job for them.

A census taker once tried to test me. I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti. *slurp slurp slurp*

No one feels safe working near ACORN.

Besides, 2-years of unemployment checks is fun.

Probably because people can make twice that on unemployment.

Amazing, the fruits of dummying down for 40 years are coming home to roost.

Being unemployed is a similar lifestyle, why do door to door?

The illegal immigration problem is also problematic in that way, because 2nd generation immigrants realize it’s easier to do nothing than pick vegetables or hang drywall.

The Liberal conundrum is really not a conundrum, it’s a reason to make everyone dependent on the State, insulating permanent power.

One news report last week said that many census jobs were going unfilled because they required a 2nd language — and not the typical foreign languages. They wanted languages specific to small groups within cities.

Most people around here aren’t interested in helping the government ask intrusive questions of its citizens. If they were just counting the number of citizens, it would probably be different.

I heard a woman on talk radio who was unemployed and had seen the ads for the census. Basically said she was afraid of where they would send her door to door. Can’t say I blame her; I’m sure they are not allowed to carry weapons of self defense.

If you take a temporary job, you will lose your unemployment check, and after being laid off again from the census, you may find your unemployment check being smaller than before.

This is exactly right. My petite 21 yr old daughter was hired and trained and promptly assigned to go alone to the least safe areas. She promptly quit. The people in charge handed out the assignements on a patronage system.

$13 an hour? Unemployment probably pays more!

I took the test and made a 98. It was the most ridiculously easy test I have ever taken in my life (like how to find the shortest route from one house to the next on a map with six roads and how to put things in numerical order that have five digits) so I would like to think that couldn’t be the problem. I hope not anyway.

The jobs are for the people who don’t send in the census forms by mail. It’s to go door to door to collect the information in person. But first you try by phone.

13 an hour is considered to be an ‘outrageous’ wage by my former employer.

My guess would be that people really don’t want to steal money from other people’s pockets while attempting to find out how much they have so that they can steal more.
