'Gilligan's Island' headed to the bigscreen
Variety ^ | Mar. 2, 2010 | DAVE MCNARY

The seven castaways of "Gilligan's Island" have found a home at Warner Bros. and Atlas Entertainment.

The studio and production company have begun development on a feature film based on the iconic CBS sitcom, which generated solid ratings during its three seasons between 1964 and 1967 and then found something close to eternal life in syndication.

Charles Roven and Richard Suckle are onboard to produce for Atlas, with Brad Copeland penning the screenplay. Original show producer Sherwood Schwartz is aboard to exec produce along with son Lloyd Schwartz.

Plans are for a contempo take on the well-known premise and characters, with the studio and the Schwartzes' blessing Copeland's initial idea for the screenplay. Roven told Daily Variety that he's hoping to start production as early as next year but won't move forward on seeking a director or cast until Copeland's script is completed.

"The characters are so good," Roven added. "We think it's going to be a great story to transport these cultural icons to the modern day."

No casting's been set although Sherwood Schwartz said in an interview last year that he was interested in Michael Cera playing the lead role.

Roven's credits include "The Dark Knight," "Batman Begins," "The Bank Job," "The International," both "Scooby-Doo" pics and the upcoming "Season of the Witch."

"We think it's going to be a great story to transport these cultural icons to the modern day."

That probably is to say, Beyonce as Maryann, Kirstie Alley as the Skipper, and Josh Duhamel as the Professor. Maybe Christina Hendricks as the movie star.

And this time somebody gets pregnant.

Christina Hendricks is actually a pretty fine idea for Ginger. I have no intention of seeing this, however. Enough with the remakes.

How about Barack Obama as the bumbling Gilligan, Bill Clinton as The Skipper, George Soros or Elliot Spitzer as The Millionaire, Bill Ayers as The Professor, Bernardine Dohrn as Mary Ann, Sean Penn as The Movie Star.

>>>Almost no tv show makes a good movie.

Broadly speaking you are right but I’d take issue with Dragnet and Popeye. Jack Webb did I believe two feature Dragnet movies. Other then length and higher caliber guest stars like Richard Boone and Dennis Weaver, both films were indistinguishable from the 50s series episodes. If you liked the show you liked the movies.

And Robin Williams’ Popeye was true to the spirit of the original Max Fleischer cartoons. It was a commercial flop but I appreciated the effort to stay true to the material.

Beyond those two you are exactly right.

And one more casting addition to make Gilligan contemporary:
Will Smith as producer Harold Hecuba.

Neither a borrower nor a lender be,
Do not forget: Stay out of debt; Think twice, and take this
good advice from me, Guard that old solvency.
There’s just one other thing you ought to do.
To thine own self be true.

But in hip hop.

I was refering to the Dan Akroyd Tom Hanks Dragnet. Made for TV movies based on shows tend to be good as they are just longer versions of the show. One of the rare good ones were the first two Addams Family and they were only decent. I cringe to think what the A-Team movie is going to be like.

Headline should read, “Hollywood Still Out Of New Ideas”.

All the junkies in Hollywood cannot come up with anything new because their minds have been altered by drugs. However, none of them will ever admit this. They are like Alcoholics that are in denial. So sad...

It will probably be an MTV themed reality show where you never know from one day to the next who is waking up with who.

If they made this remake I hope they do it like the made the two Brady Bunch movies which I think are very funny. If you havent seen them give it a try. They mention Gilligan in the second one.

They should make movies from “Please Don’t Eat the Daisies” or “The Ghost and Mrs. Muir”. Oh, wait...

I had completely forgotten the Ackroyd/Hanks version of Dragnet. To be fair though I kind of liked the music video for the film where they sing.

And it’s not so funny
It costs big money
