What happens when the first soft drink manufacturer sells a "sweeten it yourself" soda? Basically it is flavored, colored, carbonated water which you can sweeten to your own taste. No taxes since it doesn't have sugar in it. Or would selling that be called tax evasion?

It’s a good idea but they’ll just turn around and tax sugar. These politicians are lowlifes and are looking for the next cash cow to milk.

And you know what, if their fines are more than their annual salary, we’ll just start tapping into their congressional pension plans.

and/or their campaign war chests. If they're exceeding their salary then having a penalty to reelection would probably be a good thing.

"Some may disagree"

Obviously, and they're free to. I'm having a hard time linking corn syrup to the sole cause of obesity in our young people though. I definitely see the combination of soda and junk food with not enough physical activity a the prime culprit or just plain overeating because *some of them*, their lives weren't as structured as ours.

it always tasted better to me anyway.

I can't tell the difference, and made the switch from glass to 2 liters ok, but I don't like it in cans. I still drink a glass of pepsi per day on average and am slightly overweight by the charts but my daughter thinks I look underweight.

I remember how I loved fountain cokes with Coca Cola syrup when you could still get them. We also liked chocolate, cherry, lemon syrup in them.

We did lots of sports on our own like walked miles golfing, biking, tennis, etc. Most of the guys were thin, too, and who didn't enjoy eating then? The guys were either in hs sports, worked part time, or did sports on their own. Sometimes we'd pig out, and it didn't seem to bother most of us. Swimming and golf used to make me ravenously hungry.

Obesity runs in my family on my mom's side which is why I think she was overweight. I never caught her "closet" eating, she seemed to eat what the rest of us did, maybe less. I was always the one who had to have an extra helping of potatoes and gravy. I'd even put gravy on bread. But I never normally ate bread with my meals. Eating too much bread contributes to being overweight.

Californians should take up a collection to buy some rope for Dean Florez. The POS statist.

Eating too much bread contributes to being overweight.

Something I just found out recently but even bread is made with HFCS now.

Again I don't know that it's the reason for the increase in national obesity rates but it started in the 1980s when the switchover from cane sugar to corn syrup was in full swing. It's most likely part of the problem, with lack of exercise and other factors involved.

Personally I don't even drink soda anymore but only 100% pure fruit juice and Paterson in NY wants to tax even that and that's what I fear, once they start going down this road they'll be taxing everything that moves.

Corn syrup could be a factor, maybe I shouldn't be so auick to dis it. I only use it for a couple of things in cooking and the pop I drink. I used to drink a lot more and would if I felt like it, but don't.

Doesn't surprise me if the stuff is in bread because there has to be a sweetener for the yeast to work (unless you're doing sourdough or that one method that was a fad some years ago).

Seems like sweetener is in almost everything, but I NEVER use artificial sweetener, probably would have to some if I were diabetic to enjoy some of the usual things.

Tax juice? Well they haven't hit my chips and dip yet, and those are definitely not particularly good for you. I don't drink much juice, should more, have some. I was making my own "jello" with juice and gelatin, tastes much better than jello and very easy. Looks like there's sugar in jello. I still use some flavors though, just out of the habit of making it very often.

Seems like I go in cycles. Found this cheaper ice cream I like, went through a couple gallons of it, replaced it on sale for $3.99 a gallon, and haven't had any for weeks. It'll keep, in a nice plastic tub with handle.

Got me an ice cream maker and it's almost too good so I haven't used it in a while, it's just sits there otherwise I'd be eating gallons of it.:)

And artificial sweetener is a non-starter for me, somehow I can just tell it's fake, sort of like non-dairy creamer.

If they start overtaxing they'll just force people to make things at home like juicing their fruit etc. and that will put a lot of people out of work who bottle, transport, and sell these foods. Too bad and hopefully people realize it really is mostly nanny democrats pushing these ideas.

Lucky you. Mine broke, and I'd love a White Mountain one but don't want to pay that for mainly me now. When I was a kid, it was a big deal, and I was the one who got the job of handcranking the thing, I never really minded because I loved homemade and got to lick the paddles :-) When I was making my own in latter years, it was so much better than any you can buy. I'd have to go buy ice for it though which was inconvenient, tried to keep the salt on hand. Even the kinds that say they taste like homemade don't. I don't like any of the standard brands any more or those "little ones" (too expensive) but do love Starbuck's Java Chip and coffee, haven't had any for a long time. And the one local mfr, their Black Walnut.

We're on the same page about sweeteners and the fake taste. The only thing I use the dairy creamer for but haven't made for some years now is that hot cocoa mix with Nestle's, powdered sugar and powdered milk (don't like pm either but will drink it), it's too "thin", very expensive now, too. Mine gets buggy because I don't use it often so end up having to throw it out.

They're just overtaxing because they're broke and like someone posted "social engineering", and I don't see any end to it. Gotta hit the sack.

If it’s projected to raise $1.5 billion a year, that means the soda companies are not going to absorb it. They’ll pass it on to the people.

Lefties never cease to amaze me in their basic misunderstanding about everything.

The cause of obesity is excessive calories, whether it comes from cane sugar, high fructose corn syrup, bread, sodas or whatever else the whackjobs are targeting.

There may be glandular/thyroid problems in a small percentage of people, but calories are key and always will be.

Personally, I drink only water and 100% fruit juice, but what is it to me or anyone else if they want to have a soda? In fact, Coca-Cola Classic has less calories per 8 oz. (97) than my orange juice (110) or pomegranate juice (158).

So, as usual, this soda tax is based on a lie. Soda may be less healthy than fruit juice, but it does not cause someone to become any more obese.

Yes and it doesn't have any artificial ingredients and you know what's in it.

If it were possible everything I ate would be that way.

True, but I've been reading a lot about what is being done to seeds (corn fed beef), GM crops, and hormones that get in the milk. Who knows what they've done with some of the rest of it, like the eggs? Unless you buy from a farmer who feeds them a proper diet and not mass produced in a hatchery, or brown eggs from the store, the shells are so thin, you know there's something missing. I buy the jumbo ones even though they cost more, don't use that many any more.

Homemade is still better because no preservatives plus I think they put some gelatin (not bad really) and maybe other stuff in it, but I don't know why they'd need to put that in ice cream anyway if it stays frozen.

The recipe I was using probably isn't all that healthy. It calls for 3 eggs for the custard part, don't know if I can find the ice cream recipe I like the best, but it has whipped cream in it which is very rich. I think we used just eggs, milk and half and half at home.

When I empty one of my nice plastic gallon ice cream containers, I might try to make it anyway and use my mixer. It won't get as fluffy, and you have to mix at intervals so ice doesn't form on the top. My mom did it that way before we got the freezer. It won't be as good so maybe I'll just skip it.

I don't eat that much ice cream any more, but make chocolate sodas we used to get, sometimes root beer floats, and make my own hot fudge sauce. Last time I was at the store, I couldn't find any malt powder, asked at the register, they didn't know. Large supermarket, I'll check another one. I like to make my own banana and chocolate malts, good way to get rid of overripe bananas. I love banana cake but don't make it much because I always have to go get some buttermilk for that.

A California lawmaker introduced legislation on Thursday that would tax sodas and other sugar-sweetened drinks

I see the loophole in that most soft drinks today are sweetened with high fructose corn syrup and not sugar.

To get around that I heard go organic but I don't know how true that is and it is more expensive. But I've purchased organic foods like certain berries and you can tell the difference in taste, it's better imo.

Well that's it now, looks like I'll be firing up the ice cream maker, just the talk of hot fudge sauce means I've got to have french vanilla to put it over. :)

I don't either. When it first started, the only place you could get it was at the health food store, and it didn't look very good and was way more expensive. Now the supermarket has an organic section, but I pass it by, just buy regular produce and not much at that. I'm getting old. Much of the damage has probably been done, but what little I can grow myself, I do, don't spray. I should go more to the Farmer's Market during the growing season, but you can't be sure what it is, looks great though. Well that's it now, looks like I'll be firing up the ice cream maker, just the talk of hot fudge sauce means I've got to have french vanilla to put it over. :)

It's Saturday night, so last night and tonight I had a chocolate soda. Now I'm full.

I buy my meat at local butcher shops now and get free range chickens, that's about it. Don't eat too much meat any more because I'm getting too lazy to cook it. Made a huge pot of chili and used it all up over a period of several days. That's how I do. I do have some meat in the freezer, just don't want to thaw it out and not have time to deal with it, am busy on a project. Sowing seeds in containers and putting them out in the snow. Have so much sitting out there and way more to go. Anyway, I mix my soil in a storage counter on the kitchen counter, and when it gets so messy, don't like to officially cook. Tonight it was hot dogs and didn't have any buns, used bread. Paper plate. I always wanted my own rhubarb and am starting that and black raspberries from seed. Have an apple tree but just had my apricot tree cut down. I want two smaller ones (have to have two for cross pollination, usually Sungold and Moongold now) and no good place to plant them. Also doing tomatoes, peppers and herbs. The rest are flowers.

Reading this post made me hungry. Rhubarb, can't remember the last I had that and chili has always been one of my favorite dishes.

The moral of the story is it's ok to enjoy these foods in moderation but I really fear the food police are coming eventually, especially if and when the government takes over health care. They will find all kinds of excuses for raising taxes on the "bad" foods while pressuring restaurants and grocery stores not to carry others. They are coming after our freedom of choice and that's what I hate about it.
