What Union Leaders Really Think (Stossel)
FOX Business ^ | Feb. 16, 2010 | John Stossel

Posted on 02/17/2010 9:34:15 AM PST by bamahead

Today’s NY Post reveals a moment of honesty from a NY union official.

Albany Police Officers Union President Chris Mesley says that, regardless of the faltering economy, a no-raise new contract is unacceptable.

And to hell with the public.

"I'm not running a popularity contest here," Mesley said. "If I'm the bad guy to the average citizen . . . and their taxes have go up to cover my raise, I'm very sorry about that, but I have to look out for myself and my membership."

Mesley added: "As the president of the local, I will not accept 'zeroes.' If that means . . . ticking off some taxpayers, then so be it."

In the real world, when bubbles pop and markets contract, everyone has to take a haircut. In the world of politicians and unions, political muscle wins, regardless of economic circumstance.

Other unions are just as bad. When mayor Bloomberg proposed to increase teacher salaries by “just” 2 percent last month, the UFT responded, “The Mayor’s proposal is simply unacceptable… The UFT will continue - as we have always done - to work to protect the schools of New York City.”

But the teacher’s union recently turned down $700 million in federal funding for NY schools teachers because the extra money would have been paid based on performance.

The NY Daily News reports:

“[T]he union submitted a document stating, "Test score data cannot be used for teacher evaluation or individual compensation." [Union president] Mulgrew also demanded extra arbitration for teachers found ineffective under a new grading system.”

In other words: whatever you do, don’t change our insane work rules, and don’t make it possible to get rid of ineffective teachers.

On my FBN show Thursday, I’ll cover more of the failings of the government education monopoly.

Don't accept the no raise contract, go ahead and strike numb-nut. I hope it's worth it! This taxpayer say ENOUGH!

“I’m very sorry about that, but I have to look out for myself and my membership.” What does he think the public is doing? We’re all in this together. You can’t seperate the public from the police officers. Police officers are part of the public also. They are not an elite group. If society is expected to take a cut, all of society fits into that idea.

CW2 Ping

Another CW2 faultline about to crack open: overpaid public employees unions versus the bled-dry tax-paying Average Joe and Jane Saps.

from the article, from the teacher’s union:

“...the UFT will continue - as we have always done - to work to protect the schools of New York City.”

I’d always thought the teacher’s unions were a bunch of thugs - now they admit to us they’re running a protection racket!

Yep. The housing bubble and sub prime mortgages just cratered the economy. All those banking executives, they bit the bullet and tightened there belts and took a haircu... oh wait.

Bad example.

To hell with the union. If their pay and benefits have to go down to lower my taxes, so be it. I’m not running a popularity contest either.

IIRC, JFK was the one who allowed government employees to unionize.

It’s time to bust the unions for good, and imprison all the union officials under the RICO act. These bastards will do anything to extort & destroy & blackmail their own rank & file members as well as the American public.

Money sucking wastes of flesh. They are no better than the Lords and Kings of Merry ol’ England. The bloated federal government must be abolished before we will see any return to normalcy and these pinheads will have to earn a living.

"If I'm the bad guy to the average citizen . . . and their taxes have go up to cover my raise, I'm very sorry about that, but I have to look out for myself and my membership."

That's what it all boils down to for union thugs like this - complete, utter selfishness. It doesn't matter whether or not the city, state or county can afford it - screw you! I want mine!

This is the same attitude that has nearly destroyed the U.S. auto industry, closed down tens of thousands of businesses with good jobs and ballooned the federal deficit out of control.

Unions are insane. I have come to hate them and would personally like to see them abolished, especially in the public sector. The relationship between them and their employers is so adversarial, that they would rather commit suicide for their members then give an inch in a bad economy.

I watched this at home last year when the Boeing employees decided they were going to close down the production lines for almost 2 months because of new contract disputes. So, they finally got something they wanted, went back to work, and saw the company move the new airliner production to North (I think) Carolina.

I remember listening to the union bosses and the employees talking about striking and thinking, "are you guys nuts? Pick your fights better". When they were grousing about the company moving the new production line, I had zero sympathy for them.

>>IIRC, JFK was the one who allowed government employees to unionize.

That is correct, his Executive Order 10988 allowed Federal employees to unionize, and opened the floodgates for State and Local ones to do so.
