Early voting begins Tuesday as candidates blaze the campaign trail (TX Gubernatorial Race)

FORT WORTH -- Hoping to fire up supporters as early voting in the gubernatorial race begins today, U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison kicked off a "Declare Your Independence" tour Monday, encouraging Texas voters to declare their independence from Republican Gov. Rick Perry.

Hutchison will be among several candidates casting their ballots today to bring attention to early voting. March 2, the date of the primary election, is also Texas' Independence Day.

"I'm asking for your vote and I'm asking for your help," Hutchison told a crowd of more than 40 gathered in a back room at Billy Miner's Saloon in downtown Fort Worth, where she was joined by former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach, a longtime friend; U.S. Rep. Kay Granger, R-Fort Worth; and other supporters. "I will be a governor who never forgets who she works for."

Perry, Hutchison and Debra Medina, a Wharton businesswoman and tea party activist, top the primary ticket for the Republican gubernatorial nomination.

Seven Democrats are vying for their party's nomination: former Houston Mayor Bill White, Houston hair-care magnate Farouk Shami, teacher Felix Alvarado, physician Alma Aguado, college professor Clement Glenn, private investigator Bill Dear and rancher Star Locke.

Somehow, I can’t summon much enthusiasm for a statewide candidate who can fit her supporters into the back room of a saloon.

Medina is NOT representative of the Tea Party movement. She USED them- latched herself on to them. She’s a hard core Libertarian who has realized that the Libertarian Party will never win anything and that the only possible way to get herself into office is to do what Ron Paul did and wrap herself in the Republican cloak in hopes that it will fool enough of the voters enough of the time. This idea that Beck (or anybody else) sabotaged Medina is absurd. If you can’t answer “did the govt have anything to do with the 9/11 attacks?” you're not be fit to run for dogcatcher.

For God's sake, has anybody really looked into her platform- her background? Has this woman even been vetted?

She wants legalized drugs.

She backs gay marriage.

She is for abortion

She has not spoken to her elderly parents for YEARS. They had to find out she was runing for governor of Texas by reading the newspaper!

http://www.statesman.com/news/texas-politics/medina-hailing-from-beeville-learned-political-skills-on-229907.html?srcTrk=RTR_95609

What does this say about this woman's character? And rumors are begin to surface about husband Noe's past associations.

Take a look at some of the statements she has made: "It’s a shame isn’t it, that Republicans continue to ignore Hispanics especially here in Texas?’

"Who is going to think more about Latino families? Rick Perry, Kay Bailey Hutchison or me, who has a Latino family?”

"Being married, however, to someone with a Mexican American heritage, I certainly embrace the culture.”

"I believe we too often get into race when it’s immaterial.” (Obummer, is that you?)

I don't believe for one minute Medina's propaganda about wanting to strengthen the border!

La Raza probably has her in their back pocket!

Glenn Beck has once again helped the tea-party stay in the Republican mainstreamby by weeding out dangerous fringe thinkers like Medina.

Thank God Glen Beck outed her in time.

Retrieve your sombrero from the ring and go home Senora Medina. You're Texas toast.

"(Kay Bailey) Hutchison told a crowd of more than 40 gathered in a back room... "I will be a governor who never forgets who she works for."

17 years in DC and she's already long forgotten.

Who wants to bet she won’t step down from the Senate when she loses this primary?

I don't think she'll step down....not for a minute.

Unfortunately.

Maybe we can boot her out of the Senate when the primaries come up for that seat. (Can't remember when that's up....I know I voted for Cornyn in '08...)

Yeah, why would she ? If the GOP reclaims the Senate next January, she stands to become Chair of the Commerce Committee.

Thanks for again pointing out the fallacies of Medina!

I’m REALLY tired of the liberal reporters stating that she is being supported in some way by the Tea Party movement.

She is a dingbat nurse who started up a small business and was (I think) the chairman of her County bunch that was campaigning for Ron Paul. She is being pushed for Governor by the Paulbots.

A little Houston early voting info:

http://blogs.chron.com/houstonpolitics/2010/02/the_votes_are_in.html

February 16, 2010
Early voters do their thing
Nearly four times as many voters cast ballots today as did on the first day of early voting for the last gubernatorial primary election in 2006. The Harris County Clerk’s office reports 4,964 votes cast at 37 early polling stations and 8,832 more that came in the mail, for a total of 13,796.

On Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2006, 3,540 votes were cast in person or by mail.

Both parties had big jumps. The Democrats went from 817 votes cast on the first day of voting four years ago to 5,076 today. The Republican total grew from 2,723 in 2006 to 8,720 today.

Some southeast Texas info. Also the SOS will have data later today on the top 15 counties if they follow the procedures they’ve used in the past.

UPDATE: Thousands cast votes at early voting sites

Early voting for the March 2 primary eased into motion Tuesday across Southeast Texas.

Democrats showed up in far greater numbers at the polls in Jefferson and Orange counties in the first day of early voting, election data shows, than Republicans.

The hotly contested race for the Republican gubernatorial nomination drew more interest in Hardin County.

Jefferson County Clerk’s office figures show 1,561 voters cast ballots in the first day of voting. That was 1,127 Democratic and 434 Republican voters.

With few Republicans on local ballots in Orange County, elections officials there recorded 393 Democratic ballots compared to 176 cast by Republicans.

Hardin County voters cast 125 ballots Tuesday: 70 by Republicans and 55 from Democrats, Hardin County Clerk Glenda Alston said.

Democratic primaries in Jefferson and Orange counties will decide many of those counties’ races. Local primary races include precinct, county, state and congressional races.

Medina not a favorite of the Burleson Tea Party but will be in Cowtown on Sat.....

American Statesman
Jason Embry
Feb. 17, 2010, 7:00 A.M.
Tuesday highlights and the day ahead
A tough-to-define group of conservative activists, tea-partiers and others who are trying to make a statement about their unhappiness toward the Obama administration will hold a get-out-the-vote rally at noon on Saturday at the Fort Worth Cowtown Coliseum. A flood of Republican candidates will speak, including some incumbents.

But the nearby Burleson Tea Party has chosen not to participate because the keynote speaker is Republican gubernatorial candidate Debra Medina. Yes, Medina is supposed to be the embodiment of the tea-party movement. But Burleson Tea Party Chairman and Founder Angela Cox told supporters in an e-mail, “The Burleson Tea Party does respect every American’s right, as to their individual choice in candidate. The Burleson Tea Party, as an independent, grassroots organization, however, does not agree with the position that Mrs. Medina has, on the possible instigators of 9/11, or the questioning of who was behind the horrific tragedy, that took place, on that fateful day.”

When Medina was on the Glenn Beck radio show last week, she passed up a chance to disavow the notion that the U.S. was involved in attacking the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. Cox told her group that she was worried those who attend Saturday’s event (where U.S. Senate hopeful Roger Williams is also speaking) will be labeled 9/11 truthers.

“The Burleson Tea Party will not sacrifice the cause for which it originated, for any one candidate, politician or group. The Burleson Tea Party will, however, sacrifice itself for it’s fellow Americans and it’s country as a whole, shoulder to shoulder, with our fellow Americans, to take our country back, but not for the one,” Cox said in her e-mail.

In a followup exchange, Cox told me, “I, nor the BTP are not encouraging fellow Texans/Americans to not attend the GOTV rally on 2/20/10. The BTP as an independent, grassroots organization, as a whole, will not be participating. As I state in my email, every American has the right, respectfully so, of their own freedom of choice. The BTP and I are respectful of such.”
end snips
